why did Asus decide to go with the 256mb 8600gts rather than the 516mb gts?

is the 516mb card not better?

so far benchmakrs show that the g1s 256mb 8600gt is the best one out there.

haha i know. g1s's 8600gts seems to beat all the other notebooks with the card card.
im just wondering why asus decided to put the 256mb card over the 516mb. is their no gain in gaming with the higher memory or something?

The 256 model of the 8600 GT has faster memory than the 512 MB model so at this time benchmarks are showing that the 256 model is faster. I'm pretty sure that is what the previous poster meant.

I think they use faster memory. For a while people thought the g1s used gddr3 and the compal had ddr2, but now some claim its gddr3. However, I believe riva tuner is incorrect in labeling the compal as having gddr3. As of now no one has been able to overclock the compal to asus specs. The memory in the compal is most assuredly slower. Since the compal can’t match the stock g1s overclocked it gets blown away by an ovclocked g1s. I don’t know how much additional gddr3 would enhance performance. With 128 bits it might only be able to effectively utilize marginally more than 256mb. In any case, the higher speed proves superior to quantity. Plus, even with the general lag in using system ram it should make up for any lack in size seeing that the compal's graphics memory isn’t clocked faster than system ram. Though, I realize using system ram would still be significantly slower.

so far there is no information that a geforce 8600GT 512 DDR3 clocked at 700MHZ memory exists. at least I'm not aware of any models that would have it.
