Since the Asus G70 is somewhat close to release I wanted to specifically discuss the SLI solution versus the 8800 GTS or GTX. This was discussed before but I cannot find the thread and the search function on the forum has been removed.

    My questions are 2 fold:

    1. How does the 8700 GT SLI setup compare to an 8800 GTS?

    2. How does the 8700 GT SLI setup compare to an 8800 GTX?

    Thanks.

8700gt sli is about equal to an 8800gts but is less than an 880gtx. But keep in mind that not all games work with sli so the 8800gts is a more reliable choice in these situations.

Put it this way ONE 8800GTX is more powerful than SLI 8700's.. Let alone two

yup. one 8800M of either the GTS or GTX variety is more powerful than 2 of any other mobile video card.

Really, so the GTS is 15% faster than 8700 in sli working properly? Thats pretty sad. For 8700 I mean.

For future reference, google works just fine for searching NBR... there is even a dedicated searchbox in the blue area under the top menu...

It looks like I might be forced to by a gay looking Sager after all, to get the performance I want. At least I'll be damn sure not to get that queer orange trim. Ergh.

I think I've lost this battle. Now that I know the G70 is 3000 there is no way I can in my right mind get it. I'll have to go with the NP5973 I guess.

Have you looked at Gateway's FX line? They seem to be reasonably priced, both with 8800 GTS solutions:

    Roughly $1300
    http://www.gateway.com/systems/product/529668033.php

And this one with a better screen/processor/more ram @ roughly $2000

    http://www.gateway.com/systems/product/529668034.php

Although both seem to have "queer orange trim". Just make sure you uncheck the Tech support/Norton/Office packages to see those prices.

I just noticed the GTS has 32 shaders less than the GTX, but same core... unlockable perhaps? I have heard they were physically cutting the traces to these extra shaders by laser, but I'm not sure if that's true/if they are actually doing it.

No, the disabled shaders CANNOT be reactiviated. Like you said, it is physically severed from the die, and will not conduct electricity.

Its similar to 8800GTX and 8800GTS having the same core (G80), while 8800GTS has significantly less shaders than the GTX.

"We assume Asus will be providing the G70s in several differently specified incarnations, but our pre-production model was a little underwhelming."
