Anyone know the difference?
MileStonePC sells both and they are about $35 difference in the prices. Both should work with a Z96J though, I mean its the same as the S96J in that regard so....?
Thnx,

There is no difference. They are generic drives. It all depends where the vendor is buying. We use quanta drives. Some may use other drives. Super multi drives are more expensive then just duial layer drives but only by 10$ or so

Thanks for the reply - I asked the person working there and he told me they are exactly identical, same shape, specs, the drives are the same in every way except for what system they are sold with/for. There is the extra $25 cost only because its a Z96J and not a S96J. We pay more because we get a 1 year ASUS warranty on the one for the Z96J and the S96J owners pay less because they get a 2 year warranty from Intel. ......What the heck...?

I believe there are three kinds of optical drives in the market, maybe they are all made by these couple of manufacturers, maybe they all work for Z96J / S96J, but they are coming from different sources, 1. form VBI notebooks, 2. from Asus, 3. from OEM channel, the VBI ones will get warranty from Intel, are cheaper, came with VBI notebooks at 1:1 ratio, low price, but if you buy it from disti as VBI parts, the price will be higher, cannot get the bundle price (with VBI notebooks). The OEM ones are also low priced, comparable with VBI drives, but the warranty will be from the dealer or the manufacturer if you can contact them. The Asus one will be the most expensive one, warranty will be from dealers or Asus. Our selling price diffrence is a reflection of cost difference, if you see someone selling the Z96J drive at VBI drive price, it should be one from the OEM channel.
8x DVDRW for Z96J vs. 8x DVDRW for VBI Models
