So I had this brilliant idea of getting a 9 cell battery for my N61JQ, thinking I could live with the extra weight and protrusion.

Turns out that the battery stuck out the back, not the bottom, so I have a problem with only being able to open the laptop lid 35 degrees once the battery's in.

Any ideas on what I can do?

I don't follow. Why can't you open the cover beyond 35 degrees with the 9-cell battery?

It's because of the hinge design on the N61 is different from other Asus laptops. The pivot points are at the back side of the laptop rather than at the back edge so the lid pivots differently.

There's nothing you can do but return the 9-cell and hope Asus releases a different extended battery design for the N61.
