Can someone explain the difference between Intels 915GM and 915PM Chipsets? I know I could find the answer on the net with a little searching but I'm feeling kinda lazy so...

    ALSO

Justin, or anyone else, would painting the entire exterior of an ASUS laptop (both factory direct and barebone models) void It's warranty???...What about a custom design confined to the exterior lid/top surface only?

Thanks to everyone in advance [8D]

    hmm

For this one, read this thread -> http://notebookforums.com/showthread.php?t=72892

As for the other one, yes it will void your warranty. Unless you purchase from VOODOOPC which charge you an arm and a leg, but they will carry the warranty for you.

    Coma,

    integrated graphics / dedicated graphics

About painting...... this is something I'm playing with.... i've done a bunch of them, but it's hard to find the right color combo that doesn't totally take away the professional appeal of Asus' units.... http://www.proportable.com/images/aluminumcase.jpg

We do a lot of that as custom work for customers and keep their units in warranty..... If you did it..... you have two options.. try to paint it all together and get paint all over... hello void. Next... the other option is to take the entire system apart to paint the individual parts... void..... no one in their right mind would allow you to handle the motherboard and "warrant" what you're doing... think about it realistically... you may want them to, but they are warranting that the work they did was done right and will hold up.....

    However...... you've got two options......

    1. if you take your system apart, you very well may break some parts.. my suggestion is to order an entire new shell for your notebook.. every outside piece (we do this all the time)... paint that... see if you like it. If you do, you can try to take apart your unit and swap it. Then you have the original shell pieces if you want to go back to the original color (because no matter what you paint it, you'll get sick of it)

    2. Get it done factory

About painting something on the lid.... I can see the logic.. you're not opening anything....... but some people would say... you screw with it and it's voided, period.... for us... that is just something that makes the red light go off.... so then the notebooks are examined even closer to see whats going on.. because someone who would paint something on their new notebook would most likely open it up and see how everything works....

    But.. for us anyway.

CPU is warrantied for 3 years - we use intel boxed cpus instead of oem... this means instead of a 30day warranty to the oem (us), it has a 3 year warranty that is transferrable to the end user... great for a lot of reasons.

RAM is lifetime - ours.. corsair, kingston... thats transferrable to you as well.

Hard Drives - Hitachi(3 years), Seagate (5 years).. transferrable to you.... Basically the only thing you can really "void" is the motherboard or the LCD....... the motherboard is honestly the only thing you have to worry about.. the lcds are pretty sturdy..

I don't know if thats giving away a secret or anything... but understand someone won't warrant a system that has been phsyically abused..... painting is a form of that in a way.

    J

    Thanks,
    Justin

Thanks for the responses!!! Justin, what would you say to this then...hypothetically...

If I ordered my laptop through you (PROPortable), (It'll either be a W3V, M5a, or S5a...still deciding but now I'm leaning towards the W3V)...anyways, If I bought one of these systems from you...but say ahead of time I buy an entire new shell either from you or somewhere locally (How much would one be?)...Then I Custom paint it myself as desired...ship that back to you...then I order my system and you install the custom painted shell onto it and ship it out to me like any other order...along with the original ASUS shell as well...I'm not saying I'd go through all of that...but If I did, would you be open to honouring the warranty in that particular case?

If YOU were to offer a painted alternative in the future like you say you're playing with...would it be on both factory direct models as well as built on ASUS barebones...If the answer is yes to both, would the factory direct models (ie, W3V) still be covered by ASUS's International warranty or would they then revert over to being covered by PROPortable like all the barebone systems normally are?

One last thing...Sorry...If you have a demo model of the W3V or W3? which for some strange reason I think you do???...could you take a nice picture of it and the W5 side by side and post it. If you already have then can you post up the link in here. Thanks once again, I think I speak for us all when I say your time, answers, and expertise are most appreciated! [8D]

    haha....

Ok... first, i wouldn't paint a w3/v6/w1.... anything in aluminum... just doesn't look better than the original... trust me on that one.... you lose the brushed aluminum look and it sucks.

I wouldn't personally touch Asus' complete units, because we'll void their warranty and then we'll have to cover it. It's one thing if we were already getting paid for the warranty in our prices.

For the systems we're already warranting, it's not a big deal.

Usually, on a whole..... about $250 for all the outside pieces.

In case someone wanted to know, we wouldn't do a custom paint job for less than at least $900. Let me put that into context (because that sounds like a lot to me).. Voodoo will hit you up for what translates into about what... 1300-1400? ...... They mass produce their cases... since everything is painted.... I can't say what paint they are using, but if they were using the best, they'd certianly be mentioning it so they could charge more... we use PPG's DU series..... This isn't say the same color on benz, audi, whatever... it's THE paint you'd paint the car for an exact match...... it's not cheap and it's NOT easy to work with on a notebook, but it's beautiful when it's done...... we do some of these to exactly match someone's car........ whatever...

    Thanks,
    Justin
