Hello!!!
I would like to ask you, if you consider your g1s as an good buy ? I think that it is an very good loking laptop, with good built quality and good performance and i like the display a lot... what doesn't make me that hapy is the battery life, which i actually solved a bit with buying 2 baterries, but even though
what could i do to increase the battery life to the maximum ???
i don't mean the usual process like putting the laptop on the batter saving mode or using as little brightness and applications as possible... but i mean other, theoretically more advanced things i could do ? i've heard that there is a saving mode in the settings in the nvidia control panel, but i haven't found that...
is there a way how to easily ower the processor frequencies and the GPU frequencies, where they can be easily and fast put back to normal when needed for gaming ??? it is actually not that important to be able to put it back fast, because i game pretty rarely and would like to get the most of the battery life... and in some time i'd like to take it to school everyday, so i'l need more then 2 hours...
So what are your procedures to get the absolute maximum of battery out of the asus g1s ??? what is your record in battery life ?
is there a way how to change the frequence of the flashing green lights on the sides ??? i know the asus program direct console can turn them just on and off, but i am searching for a way how to keep them on constantly, or make them flash faster.... is it possible to program an application which would do that ? or a hardware way how to do it ? any ideas?
thank you very much for your answers !!!

If you're looking for battery life, this is not the computer for you. It's about an hour to an hour and a half on balanced settings.
-
I get nearly three hours on mine, running 30-40% brightness, wifi on, listening to music, chatting on aim, browsing forums. Nearly, not quite, but without wifi I hit 3 hours when I have to.
I haven't changed any power settings (apart from brightness levels, and sleep timers). No underclocking, no voltage, nothing.
I have no idea on the lights: I hate them. I installed the direct console software, disabled the lights, and uninstalled the program again. Sure, it removes the clock function from the OLED screen, but I don't care. One less icon in the taskbar for me, haha.
I do, however, run a [relatively] clean install of Vista. On boot, I use a little over 650mb of ram, substantially less than the 1gb+ some people find themselves using. -
If u install XP you will get a little more battery life. If you want to install XP this site has a good guide http://asusg1s.blogspot.com/

There are some undervolting guides posted as well using RMclock which have proven to increase the battery performance.

I routinely get 2:30 hours with wifi on, on powersaver settings at school. You could do this or that to increase battery life, but in the end, I doubt anything you do would make a substantial difference. The fact is this is an energy-consuming laptop with a hefty GPU and a 6-cell battery. That considered, 2 1/2 hours ain't bad!!!
I'll be ordering the 8-cell replacement battery soon myself! -
RMClock won't help much because the CPU will be idle most of the time.
But lowering the clocks and voltages of the GPU will help. To do that, the GPU has to be set in Power-Saving mode from the property pages, if it's an nVIDIA the power saving tab should be called nVidia Powermizer.
A good driver will have the GPU in Power Saving or Balanced modes on battery. Usually it's Balanced though, so it's better to change it to Power Saving. -
what is the 8-cell battery you are talking about ? you mean like an 8cell battery made especially for the g1s ? how much more life do you get out of it ???
where do i find the nvidia powermizer ???
ai have the asus program where you can set the olption for maximum battery but it gives me even though less than 2 hours...
how do you think woulf it be possible to totally underclock the GPU ? i mean for times when you do not game you really don't need a that powerfull GPU right ??? so how could it be done to reallyt really underclock it ??
anyone has an idea with the lights on the sidE ??? how to change the way thy flash to a faster flashing ?
thanks folks -
Hi. 1) Isn't the default battery 8-cell on the G1? It's a pretty big computer... my V6 batt is 8-cell and the computer is much smaller.
2) Powermizer is in the driver properties. WinXP: rightlick desktop, properties, settings, advanced, GPU properties tab. Vista: have no idea, should be similar.
3) "Totally" underclock? What do you meanBesides putting it in power saving mode there's not much more you can do except tinker with the VBIOS and set clocks and voltages explicitly, which I don't recommend except if you're a very experienced person.
4) About the lights... there are threads around.
Btw, a single question mark at the end of a sentence suffices. -
oh oh so so far i've researched there is no possibility of controlling the powermizer function on vista... what i've researched is that it is controlled automatically... which i don't really like... uhm...
btw how to easily and quickly turn off windows aero ?
so how much do you actually think the undervolting could help ? what about using riva tuner or applications like that ?
what do you mean with thread around... is theere a possibility on how to change the frequency or not ?
thanks in advance! -
If it's controlled automatically it's not so good... Maybe there are modded drivers out there that allow you to control it?
As to turning off Win Aero, yes, there is a program called Vista Battery Saver. Check my Vista guide and/or Flamenco's Top Vista Tweaks.
Like I said undervolting the CPU won't help much with batt unless you do pretty CPU-intensive tasks on battery power. It will help a little with temps under load.
I do not know about the lights. Nor do I care, to be honestWhat I meant is that there are threads around about those lights, just use the search.
