I am now looking at purchasing a ASUS M6Ne (thanks to the recommendation from Underpantman [])....it looks like a nice system for my needs.
I have been looking at the reviews and ASUS website and there's a few things that I was hoping someone could maybe help me with:
1. The spec I am looking at (http://www.cworld.com.au/info.php?ID=115825), says it has a "Built-in DVD-Dual". What is this? A Burner I assume - maybe 2X speed? or maybe dual layer?
2. What sort of installation CDs come with laptops (this one in particular)?....do you get a WinXP CD so you can re-install if necessary?
3. The Radeon 9700 w/ 64Mb RAM....is this good for some general gaming? I am not a hard core gamer or anything, but I want the few games I have (mainly sport games) to play well with reasonable detail. I was looking at another system with a 128Mb 9700 - what does the extra 64Mb provide?
Thanks in advance.

1. "Built-in DVD-Dual". Sounds like they're refering to a built in DVD/CD-RW Combo drive...
2. It comes with DRIVER installation CDs and PowerDVD/Nero Express. No Windows CDs.
3. The Radeon 9700 w/64 MB Ram is great for general gaming... one of the best ones out there at the moment probably. I've seen a lot of people play Doom3 on the M6Ne and it runs fine... very playable. And we all know how demanding that game is [xx(]
Personally, I love my M6Ne... I have the non widescreen version. It's quiet and fast... not too heavy, and good for everyday use.
The only downside is that you may see a dead pixel or two... but most people don't notice them too much []

"Dual" refers to dual format: DVD+R/RW and DVD-R/RW.
The Asus doesn't come with windows. It comes with the necessary drivers and Asus utilities. Windows will only come if you buy it from the reseller. Since the configuration you pointed us to has Windows XP Pro included, you can probably assume it is a regular OEM WinXP Pro install disk. Check with the reseller to be sure.
The 9700/64 is fine for most uses. Only hard core gamers complain that there isn't 128. For them, a 9700/128 isn't good enough anymore since the new card technology is here. You can look at my review and see a gaming benchmark result. I'm told it is exceptional for the memory.

Great choice; I love my M6800Ne [

...except for the fact that my fan doesn't turn on until the CPU is 75 degrees... but hey, that just means it's more silent that way []

Well I got one...went to check it out at the store, they had one left in stock - got an extra 512Mb RAM.
Just been starting to set it up tonight.
Oh I love the quietness compared to my desktop []
Still a bit iffy about the screen - doesn't seem too clear...I might need some new drivers.
Anyway - thanks again for the advice.

Did you get the widescreen one or the regular 15.1" version?
Also, did you get any dead pixels on your screen?
It's normal for the monitor to seem not quiet as clear... after all, the refresh rate is maxed out at 60 Hz. I'm used to 75+ Hz [xx(]
Have fun with your system... that sounds like one mean, notebook machine. -
I know this may sound stupid but just check that the screen is set to its native resolution, windows sometimes does't set it right and the screen will look a bit funny.

Hmm.. interesting point. I just set the resolution to 1400x1050... and yes, it does seem a lot clearer. However... the fonts are extremely small [:0]
I'm sure I can get used to it though... I still have my 20/20 vision[]

Got the widescreen one - 15.4" WSXGA....I cannot see any dead pixels - the guy at the shop set the background to black and then white so we could look for dead pixels - can't see any.
It just seems very bright....like the contrast or brightness is off...I can adjust the brightness with the Fn+F5/F6 keys, but it still seems like I can't get it right for me....it feels like the light parts of the screen are very glarey...but maybe I am just not used to LCDs??? I have never had one - always just had a desktop with a CRT.
I'm pretty sure its on the native resolution, 1680x1050. The font is quite clear - just pretty small....I've set it to lower resolutions, but the font seems fat and blurry.....maybe I am hard to please []
The extra screen real estate is great tho!!! - seems like the screen is heaps wider.
I installed my favourite game - NBALive 04....my god it runs fast as!...leaves my desktop for dead - maximum detail...woohoo!
I was gonna download some recent drivers - but I think I may already have pretty recent ATI ones...i've got v6.14.10.6422.
Are Omega drivers better?....I download v2.5.58 ...but haven't installed them.

It's really up to you. If you think your current drivers are inadequate, you may want to try the Omega ones. However, if you think the current drivers are great, I dont' see a point in upgrading to Omega.
I agree... in lower-than-native resolutions, the fonts appear to be slightly blurry... the only other resolution I thought was pretty clear, was 1152x864. But now that I've experienced the native resolution for a while... there's just no comparison as to its clarity.
Happy computing strider... welcome to the M6Ne family []
