It's the omega drivers, I know that because I had to go and wipe my system clean to bring my system back to the point where I made my original post. I thought maybe the earlier bios changed something with hypermemory, but actually as I remember now, hypermemory wasn't even opened up until the second bios and there have only been two released anyway.

Then I tested out the omega drivers and one of them limited you to 128 (64 dedicated and 64 shared) and apparently with the newest verison it works differently.

heck! i'm running a gig of ram but i only get 64MB of Ram. (none is being shared) i'm not really concerned about this but what i am worried about is this....Powerplay does not work for some reason. It thinks the laptop is plugged in even when it's running on batteris and is constantly runnin on "Optimal Performance" regardless of how i have it configured. I really want to clock it down a little for heat/battery efficiency.

Well the reason I presented this was so people could compare and make sure they are using the same set up... bios, drivers, etc are all important to make the comparison work..... if you're not showing any hypermemory, you probably still have the first bios.... 0501

    ArchMaster, use this link: http://www.ati.com/online/mobilecatalyst/

Make sure you have the latest version of Microsoft .NET framework installed, Catalyst Control Center (CCC) requires it. More information can be found in this thread at driverheaven:

cool! bios update solved that problem but i still can't figure out why neither CHC nor powerplay can clock down the x600. Any solutions?

take chc off and try to use powerplay... I think there may be a conflict there.

ok, I was able to update my graphics drivers (thanks makken) but I am unable to get the bios update I need. I went to ASUS downloads area for the W3V and downloaded the newest BIOS they had listed thier. But something seemed Odd about it. The file is W3V0502A.zip which i think is the correct BIOS but the folder structure is crazy. the tree of folders is listed as

    Documents and setting -> jackie_fang -> << ai| -> upload -> 050607 -> W3V0502A.ROM

so I have this file, not sure what to do. I also tried Asus Live update for a bios upgrade, but when I try to connect I get "Unable to find the file on the remote server".

Anyways, I was looking for help installing the W3V0502A.ROM file that I have if this is the correct BIOS file. If someone could point me to a walkthough on a installing a BIOS I would really appreciate the help. Thanks

yeah download that.... some of the idiots over there don't realize they're uploading them the way they are, but the bios is fine.

you'd be best off downloading winflash if it's not already on your computer.

is winflash used for installing a BIOS? I'm kinda clueless on the whole BIOS thing, I just know enough that you can render the laptop useless if you mess up the install. If there is anysort of walk though someone knows about, that would be awesome.

winflash will flash the bios in a wins app. it's basically idiot proof and the only way you can screw it up is if your notebook battery dies half way through..... so plug it in.

Ok, i downloaded winflash, but it didn't like my BIOS and wouldn't run the program. I guess the BIOS isn't winflashable or so I read from the download site. Here's the Bios I am currently running on my W3V [IMG]

any other suggestions would be helpful. I read that ASUS live update can flash a bios but I have no clue how it works. Thanks Justin for the effort.

no no no, wrong BIOS, there are two seperate ones, the video card BIOS and the main system BIOS, the video card BIOS on the X600 should be fine; even if it wasn't, I'm not sure if it's so easily 'flashable'

What you want is the main system BIOS. Next time you boot up your W3V, press F2 when the ASUS logo shows up to enter the main system BIOS and check for the version. It should be 501 i believe if it doesn't support Hypermemory.

I'm not sure where you're getting the problem with winflash? did you download it from the asus W3V downloads page? I haven't flashed my BIOS in a long time, so I can't remember the procedure exactly, but I believe you should be able to just open up the winflash utility executable, it'll ask you to load a rom, and you can just flash it from there.

Ah i miss the old days of floppy ROM flashing ;)

Actually, the W3V BIOS includes the ATI VGA BIOS as part of the package, so when you flash to the newest system BIOS you are also flashing your graphics BIOS as well.

Winflash should be quite easy to use. After you extract the file from the zip file, then just run winflash and select the file you've extracted... it is pretty self explanatory.

Okay, after i unchecked the "Enable ATI autoclock" in CHC, powerplay is finally showing that the card is running in "Optimal Battery Life" as it's configured to. HOwever, there is no way for me to tell whether the card is clocked down or not or is there?

turning off powerplay and enabling CHC on the x600 didn't seem to work.

YAY! i finally got my bios flashed and everything is as it should be now. I feel like a retard though. the winflash program is pre-installed and listed under asus utilites. Once I found that program it was a breeze. Thanks for all the help guys.

If you want to see whether the card is clocked down, go to the ATI Display properties page -> Options -> Details. It will show you the current memory and core clock.

Hi, I just purchased 2 x 1gb of RAM, and I installed the new cat 6.1. What set up do I need to get what Justin got? Right now it says I have 256 mb of gfx memory. Is there any way to adjust how much system memory is shared?

Considering you revived a long dead thread........ go back to the begining and look at what I tested...... I'm fairly certain there's been been a new bios and graphics driver since then...... so I'm not sure if you can still unlock as much as I had... but if you're using the same drivers and bios - it's automatic.

    Hi Justin,
I can't figure out how to change it. My W3V was repaired recently (new motherboard & hard drive), BIOS is already 0602A (there aren't such a settings). You can't overwrite it using biosflash either as it is an older version...any idea?
    Thanks

Hypermemory is dynamically assigned by the BIOS, and depends on the total available RAM installed - it cannot be altered or changed by the end-user, to my knowledge.

Justin hasn't posted here in nearly 4 months. If you really need to reach him you might try direct email or call PROPortable's CS line.

A little note : It can be disabled in the registry (theoretically). But the cons outweigh the pros, so it is better to leave it enabled.
