AMD XP-M 2800+ and ATI 9600 is inside. Is this temperature normal for running demanding 3D apps, or am I the only one having this problem?

The temp seems a bit high, but given the heating issues with the A2D series its not unsurprising. You can try a notebook cooling pad I'm pretty happy with my coolermaster coolpad (http://www6.tomshardware.com/mobile/20041216/index.html).
May also want to try some good quality thermal paste betw. cpu and heatsink.
These may help to reduce heat by maybe 5C or so.
Bit of a bandaid solution but thats all I can think of short of getting a new lappie

Underpantman thanks for the answer. This could be fine solution. Is the coolermaster coolpad noisy? Can you please tell me what temperature difference you have when you run your laptop with and without coolmaster coolpad. I've uninstalled Power4 Gear+ v1.1 and put SpeedSwitchXP v1.4, and max temp has lowered now from 86 to 83C. I hate software developed by ASUS, because it's buggy. I would like to try thermal paste but I don't think it would be wise to break my warranty, especially with this model.

Its actually pretty good noise wise, less noisy then the high speed lappie fan, the exact dB rating can be found on the coolermaster website if your keen, sounds like a dull whir which I'm fine with, but if your sensitive to fan noise note that this won't reduce your laptop noise but add to it, as you will still probably have your lappie fan running full tilt on games. I have also got a antec cooler and a targus one. The antec is much louder ~35+dB from memory and you can really hear it. The targus is made outa cheap plastic, and is pretty crap but it was cheap, slim, quiet, and works really well at keepin my external Hdd's cool.
I agree on the thermal paste, would be a last resort...maybe try and get the ASUS guys/retail store to put it on for you, to get around warranty concerns???
    hope this helps

After all, isn't that what "Service warranty" is for [ ;)]

To be honest, I've never even known what service warranty was really for...[:I]

I noticed that CPU temperature does not exceed 80C while playing 3D games with "Max. Performance" setting in SpeedSwitchXP 1.4, because only with this setting the fan on my A2D reaches 5K rpm. So, funny thing is that my CPU is heating more (up to 84C) while in "Dynamic Switching" mode which is supposed to save more power, and the fan in this mode reaches only 4k rpm top. Also I want to mention that while I was using Power4 Gear+ 1.1 the fan never ever reached 5k rpm, not even when my CPU once heated to 90C (which was caused by dust clothes on the air inlet at the bottom of my laptop). I've sent a mail to ASUS tech support and here's their reply:

    Me:
    "[Problem Description]
When playing 3D games CPU temperature goes up to about 86C. I'm using "Game" preset in Power4
Gear+ 1.1 when playing games. I check temperatures in Asusprobe v2.1. Is 86C normal for
demanding 3D apps, or am I having laptop that is not working properly?"

    Leon (from ASUS):
    "Dear Friend :
Thank you for contacting ASUS Customer Service.
My name is Leon and I would be assisting you today.
Please tell me what the speed of FAN in the PC Probe,I think if your notebook work normal ,it is normal, the CPU can work stably in the temperature.
If having any problems, please don't hesitate to let me know. Let's discuss this issue together.
Thank you for using ASUS products and enjoying ASUS services!

It's amusing yet frustrating how ASUS is always WILLING to help.. but never really do and they take forever to reply.

Is is just me or do most people get replies from leon?

I love the line "Let's discuss this issue together"!

It just reaks of "I'm busy playing solitaire, but my boss will get angry at me if I don't appear to look helpful".

I noticed, using the asus probe utility, that when the battery is under charge, and the processor is in max performance mode, the temperature reached is around 85°C (and the fan is at 5000RPM). Nonetheless when I disconnect the battery, the temperature instantly drops to 69°C (and the fan to 4000RPM), and after 10-15 seconds, the temperature is around 60°C, and the fan is going at 3000RPM only.

Is it normal that the temperature really instantly drop by around 17-18°C, or is it a bug with asus probe when the battery is under charge?

I think it's more of a bug with the ASUS sensor
there's no way the CPU will jump in temperatures like that so quickly.. it defies the physics (Newton's Law of Cooling, that is)
