    It's A2500D with AMD 2600+, Radeon 9600, 512MB RAM, 40GB HDD, 5 months old.

Last night I turned on notebook and left to read something. It booted XP and waited on login screen, no CPU intensive activity was taking place. After 10 mins it turned off with smell of melted plastic. Apparently, crappy fan system we all complained about here didn't turn at all for some reason!
Fortunatelly laptop is still operational, it worked after it cooled down. Plastic on bottom of laptop, where CPU lies is melted a bit, and grills where hot air goes out are distorted. These are only consequences so far.
Unfortunatelly ASUS's BIOS doesn't have settings for shutdown temperature although it obviously have functionality.
I've set Asus Probe to run on boot and to shutdown on 75C. We'll see if it happens again.

Also, in this 5 months, I had one PSU failure, I had failed sound once, and after repair I still have distorted sound (worked ok on begining).

Really bad quality from ASUS. Not recommended at all.

Can you send photos of that melted plastic?

It would be nice to see what to expect within next few months.

I wonder if Asus has heard the saying "Any publicity is good publicity"?
I don't agree with that, maybe they do? [ ;)]

It's good that it still works. I still haven't decided to make a reclamation, and be without notebook for indefinite amount of time, and possibly also loose several days afterwards to install/setup everything again if they give me new one. Problem is also that Asus can take a quick look, see that it works and return it without fixing anything (perhaps they'll only change CPU cover).
Anyway I have MotherboardMonitor set up to shutdown when temperature goes over 75C, we'll see if this happens again.

that is simply unacceptable on ASUS's part.
I would definitely report it and get a replacement...

heck I thought I had it bad with my two stuck pixels... (I'm still trying to get this issue sorted out btw)

If I were you, I'd DEFINATELY take it to ASUS' repair center! You can also, if they decide to give a brand new one keep the old HDD. This way you won't loose time by installing a new system!![8D]
