Hi all, I recently got an A6ja and am very pleased with it, however I have noticed compared to other laptops with the 256mb x1600 I am getting low benchmarks. With the stock drivers I got an awful 3dmark '05 score, and with omegas i get around 3600 - 3700 which is still lower than most other notebooks with an x1600. I can't seem to get it to overclock really at all without crashing, have people had success with the latest build of atitool? I was wondering if anyone knows what the stock speeds are for the x1600 in other laptops, mine seems to be 452core/351mem according to atitool which seems a bit low/odd. Thanks in advance - Ben

Hmm, I don't have any direct experience with the X1600, but Anandtech's report suggests clocks of 470/470...
-
Hmm it seems odd that the mem in my a6ja is so horribly underclocked, can anyone else with an a6ja give me their core/mem speeds? - Ben
-
x1600 on my w2j is clocked 420/468. And I got 3914 3DMark '05
-
Hmm can anyone else with an a6ja confirm their speeds? Any idea why they shouldbe so much lower than other models?

Boffinboy, I suggest trial an error rather than taking someone elses clock speeds, because all gpus are different and yours may not be able to handle someone elses speed.
Or you may be able to get more outta your GPU than others.
So i suggest just slightly bump up the settings, then run a stress test to see if there's any artifacting. If no, then increase settings again.
Now that you've seen what Anandtech has 470/470, slowly work you way up to that and you should be good.
Mind you, watch out for excessive heat, so you will wanna run Everest to monitor heat under load and in idle and compare it to your stock settings.
So i suggest you make an excel table and record everything and then find the best settings for your laptop that doesn't cause it to go bad is any way.
Hope this helps.
Thanks,

Thanks mysticgolem, I'm not that bothered about overclocking I'm just concerned about my stock speeds being very low, not overclocked speeds. I am trying to find out what other a6ja user's stock speeds are. I haven't been able to overclock at all using atitool, it just crashes as soon as i set it to find max mem or core before even raising them, this has happened with all of the drivers i've used, incuding omega and zeropoint

hmm, interesting.
overclocking is very dangerous, imo, i personaly wouldn't mess with it at all.
My friend tell me all the time to overclock my P4 2.53ghz to close to 3.0 ghz because it's possible, but i say no because i don't care about a 500mhz boost, nor i do i wanna deal with the ramifications of it.
If your really keen in finding what other A6j GPU clock settings that other users have, ask the people who have done a review, send them a PM. However not many have completed a review.
You can ask "Who has an ASUS A6Ja and what's your GPU Clock speed?"
Something to that effect.
Thanks,

AIBs or OEMs decides the final clockspeeds on every notebook after their thermal design. Even though several notebooks all have, let's say, an Mobility X1600 does not mean that they all fit within the same thermal design.
Hence, the clock difference either from model to model or from brand to brand.
Now about overclocking, it really isn't dangerous in the same way getting hit by a car is. In fact, most of the time it does not really alter the lifetime of a product (considering you are most likely changing the hardware out before it dies) if it has sufficient cooling. Of course, given the limited amount of space reserved for a cooling solution inside a notebook, I wouldn't advice it.
That's not to say I don't do it or haven't killed hardware by doing it. If you can afford to play, you can afford to pay
I currently have overclocked a Pentium M (Dothan) model 740 (1.60Ghz) to 2.80Ghz and it have been running like this for a year. Needless to say, as soon as I can get my hands on a Conroe or Merom, it will be a gooner. -
My A6J clock speed is the same (452/351MHz) and yes, I get decent but unimpressive 3DMarks. So I suppose it's normal for this model.
Maybe we can get speeds for other brands/models with X1600 to compare with. -
Not to mention overclocking most of the time voids the warranty. So if overclocking breaks something and they find out you overclocked well then your up S**t creek.

Mine A6Ja also comes with 450/350, my 3dmark05 scores stays around 3600... I tried ATitool and the best way to oc is to only oc the memory not the core. It will stay stable that way. I reached 390 for memory and had 3850 points in 3dmark05. I do know that some A6Ja ships with GDR3 vram and some like mine ships with DDR2 vram. The GDR3 models reach 3950 with stock drivers...

Remember that many people test and benchmark under different settings.
Some people turn down their Image Quality settings to Max Performance or whatever it is labeled as to get max scores.
Also since it's an Ati card, try setting A.I. to Advanced, it may bump up your score, it may not.
Cheers,
