Has anyone attempted the installation of a 2 gig stick of RAM? Maybe one of you venders have access to the resources to test it out and see of it works. I'd love to upgrade to 2 X 2gb sticks if I know it will work. The price of RAM seems to be falling fast.

It should work though you might need to update the bios. However if you are using a 32bit version of win XP, the OS will only recognize 3gigs.

I believe that the max ram you can upgrade to in the A8J series is 2 gigs.

portable one sells the a8js with 4 gb ram. That means its ready to use 2 gb dimms right now. The asus site uses the stats for older a8j systems when it says 2 gb.

Because the a8jp uses the same motherboard as the a8js I would suspect it is compatible with 4gb.

You tell me, do you use the same bios? Because its very possible that will never be updated for 4 gb.

There is no dealer for the a8jp except newegg.com. I doubt they will experiment for you.
One of the a8jp owners will probably have to find out.

Do you have a link to this? I'm pretty sure the max mem for the A8 series is 2 gigs.

Stamer - Thanks. That is good news. I may buy one stick of 2gig and see if it works on my A8Js. I do understand that I will need a 64bit OS and was hoping to get my free vista upgrade as x64 but that was recently shot down by the upgrade center. Now I'm contemplating maybe getting into Linux or seeing if it will be inexpensive to upgrade Vista to x64.

dr yuhwie - I know that the documentation states 2 gig max but I also know that the chipset can handle 4 gig and I see in the Sony section that some folks have successfully used a 2 gig stick with the same chipset.

2 gig sticks can be found now for about $200 vice the $500 they were a month ago. At that rate may they will pay us the take them off there hands in a few months :)

Im interested in you buying one first though.

The reviews say it doesnt run at 667

the patriot is out of stock with no reviews. 99% certain all 3 listed are the exact same thing.

Well, if the reviewer has another SODIMM installed that is clocked at 533, then he'll only get 533 even if the other SODIMM is clocked at 667 (if i'm not mistaken). This could be the reason.

Since I haven't seen any posts where folks have actually installed a 2 gig stick in the A8Js, I wanted to let everyone know that it will work.

I got a G.Skill 2 gig stick from Newegg ($129) and it works like a charm. Runs at 667.

So, go forth and add RAM!

Just want to share my experience, you can read it here. After a further discussion with some friends here, I've come to a conclusion that this behavior is caused by the 945 chipset, which can only recognize up to around 3 GB (2.87 gb in my case).

Ya he said he only put in 1 2gb stick.

So up to this point I dont think you can get beyond 3 gb with the 945 chipset.

No bios update needed for a single 2gb ram stick

should be able to get at max 3.25gb with a 945g chipset, not all mobo's bios are the same tho and may give you abit less.

I also had read a test report of ASUS A6JA with 2x2GB and only recognized 3GB, not 4, so it might be a limitation of 945G chipset....

Ya well bios has nothing to do with this normally.

bios can refuse to recognize a 2 gb dimm though yes, but it cant make the computer adress more ram

So heres the thing, once you see the computer recognizes 2gb ram dimms theres nothing else bios is involved with.
