DVI stands for Digital Visual Interface. It provides an all digital connection to a digital display such as LCD flat panels and digital front projections. This gives a higher signal quality. You can also use a small DVI-D to HDMI converter plug and connect your laptop to a HD display.

yup too bad there's no DVI on the W3J. It's suprising how few notebooks actually have a DVI port

I do believe dvi is actually an orphaned connection to monitors because it doesnt do the sound on the hd content.

so the reason laptops skipped it is because in 2007 its going to be hdmi that you want.

Aside from the interior, purely exterior. I was considering buying the A8J, but with all the reviews I became uneasy. According to what I have read the W3J uses a cmo instead of the auo in the A8J thus making the screen "not as bad?" Secondly, I hear the W3J is more "sturdy" than the A8J? There was a deal on one of the sites offering a T7200 but for 100 more. If its how I think it is, though I dont think I would mind spending the extra cash on the W3J, though.

Am I in the ballpark at least?

I would take the A8J for these reasons:
Its lighter, its cheaper, its more powerful, has a higher resolution display, and its far cheaper.

Screen: I dont get not as bad. I have heard bad things about the viewing angleson the A8Js, but I guess that is the price you pay for having a higher res display, and it is by no means a bad display. The W3J screen may have better viewing angles and not as much complaints, but the resolution is lower and irregular (1280x768, as opposed to 1280x800).
Sturdier: True. The W3J has better build quality, a better hinge design, better materials, etc. Again, not to say that the A8J is bad, but it is a different class of laptop. The A8J is more against the Dells and the HPs while W3J is against ThinkPads, LG/Samsungs, Sonys, etc.
You get what you pay for, and the A8 offers more performance, while the W3 offers more quality. The W3 is also $600 more than the A8Jp, and $300 more than the A8Js. Keep that fact in mind.

Does that mean I won't be able to hook up my w3j to another LCD monitor?

If your LCD supports bot VGA and DVI then yes you can connect your LCD via a VGA cable.

However, if your LCD only supports DVI, then you can't connect your W3J to the LCD because it is incompatible.

There's only 1 way to you can do so, get an adapter which costs 250$ which can transmit a VGA signal into a DVI signal so that you can use your LCD. But that is if you want to.

Doesnt W3J come with Core Duo? Doesn't A8JS come with Intel Core 2 DUO. Calculation to pi is much faster. GPU is a bit better. Resolution for A8JS is much better. Comparing these 2 machines is like comparing a ferrari with a mazzerati. A mazzerati uses the same parts as a ferrari just "tuned up" 2 be better. Just because mazeratti isnt a bigger company or it doesnt have the ferrari logo or the look its not the typical choice. Mazzerrati is usually $100,000 cheaper then a ferrari. (MODELS MAY VARY)

UPGRADING YOUR FERRARI (LIKE UR W3J TO INTEL CORE 2 DUO 7200) WILL COST EXTRA JUST BY IMPROVING IT TO EQUAL STANDARDS. ITLL COST WAY MORE!

Just to let you know Ferrari owns mazzeratti. They use the same parts and everything. Its a hella lot cheaper though.

I voted for the W3J. It does come down to performance vs quality, and I just want something that I know will last.

I voted for the w3j, simply because of the battery life. Even without using the modular bay, it's an 8-cell as opposed to a 6-cell in the A8js. You can get the A8js w/bluetooth a T7200 and 1 gig of ram for $1649 while the same specs (except for the gpu and screen of course) on a W3j is only ~$50 more. The battery life, build quality and looks simply make it a far better value imho.

Well now that the w3j's are being discontinued, you can get pretty good deals, I got mine for ~1800 (including shipping) w/ a CORE 2 DUO 7200.
I agree on the fact that it comes down to (quality) vs (performance for good price). Either way i think it's a win win situation, it just comes down to personal preference. I personally like the fact that people like the looks of my notebook, and quality lasts, so I dont have to worry about it falling apart years down the road.
