    Hey guys,

So I just got my A8JA today :) Loved it so much until now except the screen and lid... The lid is like a cheap plastic. Everytime I hold it I feel like I'm going to break the lid. Whenever I press a little ( very very gently ) on the upper part of the lid ( near the webcam area ) the screen around there become "waving" flicker? Is it normal? Should I return it? is it a defective LCD?

Here's a movie of me gently pressing the lid .. and u can see the screen gets flickering....

Oh, and for you guys who had a a8j series... can u close the lid perfectly? ..... the lid on mine is kinda ... "open" it just won't close perfectly.... here attached is a pic of it.... am I just being picky?

    Thanks,

    TJUN

Hey Tjun, PM'd you. But that's definitely not right. My A8Jm closes perfectly and the screen is well built (feels solid, not like it's gonna break everytime I touch it). Should go back to the dealer and get a replacement.

That's definately a defective unit, i think there may be a screw inside that came loose.

hmm, that movie, seemed a little difficult to see, but i watched it 5 times, i finaly saw it. it called rippling of the screen. Most notebooks would require you to press extremely hard in order to see that rippling.

I was messing around with a toshiba laptop, and i gently twisted the lid, and the screen turned off, i was like wow, and putting my finger in the back of the lid also cause rippling.

As for the latch when you close, that's definately not right! RMA it and then test that webcam area again for flex.

    Hope this helps.

    Thanks,

    MysticGolem

i would return or send it in for repair. The rippling is normal when you push on any lcd. But it should close better than that. i have heard many possitive reviews on that model so you might want to get another one.

    Thanks for replying guys...

So I just found out that the A8J in some websites also has the same loose lid problem as mine. here's a picture i got from a chinese website reviewing a8jm... you can see the lid looks kinda creaked open ( blue circle ) from above... mine too. I guess I'm being too picky here... or maybe Asus needs to make some improvement in this new model.

And about the LCD.... I'm getting more worried now, since I didn't have to press it hard to make the screen ripple.... even toching the lid very gently will make it ripple... actually, I didn't mind it so much, since the part of LCD that's rippling is small ( see my video posted above ), but will it affect my lcd's life? will it make it more prone to accidents etc?

Since I've already spent hours installing windows, fill warranty card etc... maybe returning it is kinda hard to do...So if you guys can confirm that my LCD will be okay... then I'm gonna keep it. :p

    Thanks,

    TJUN

I guess thats how the lid is designed and it isnt loose. as for the lcd ripple if you arent pushing down on it what do you have to worry about? but if it ripples as easy as you say thats not a good thing it means its not protected very well. and you need to be carful.

don't worry about the rippling. I have it also at the exact same spot on my A8Jm. I also doesn't require much touching to cause it. Only tapping the area lightly causes th rippling. I'm not concerned.

I also have the same lid "problem" you have but I don't consider it problem. It seems to be slightly elevated as well when the lid is closed at the corners. The small round pad on the lid doesn't touch the palm rest area when closed. I'm pretty sure all A8Jx are like this. I wouldn't worry too much. It'll just give you a headache.

    Thanks for confirming that, tallshorty...

Yesterday I went to Asus' service center, asking them about the lid, keyboard flex ( left side of the keyboard is trembling when I press a,q,z,tab, caps lock, shift, etc ) and the hdd compartment won't close perfectly... hm... looks like i'm too picky huh.. Anyway, they make me wait for 4 hours and then they just told me that there's nothing they can do. They tried to fix everyithing but it's not possible because the design of a8j is originally like this ( flex here , flex there... soft here, soft there.... )

Sigh... maybe you're right.. I shouldn't worry too much... but the worst part is everytime I hold it, I always feels like I'm holding it too hard, like I'm gonna break it. When I compare it with my gf's w3z .... there's no competition at all...

aww, lol :(, well one of the things that different from the A series and W series was build quality, but honeslty don't worry too much, i have yet to come accross an issue regarding Lid Flex led to a disaster in the LCD. You know what i mean?

People definately prefer a studier lid, but so far i don't see how it can really affect in any real way, unless you take ur finger and jam it into the back of the lid and break the crystals or something.

People are complain about flex on keyboards, now this is definately understandable. I've played Cod2 on an old P4 laptop in which the keyboard was warped upwards..lol! right where the WASD QE, shift ctrl and alt keys were, it din't affect my gaming in anyways LOL!.

So it's possible you may just get used to the flex in the keyboard.

And enjoy your laptop! :D, it really is a great one.

    Thanks,

    MysticGolem

seconded. My lid closes like the weight picture. Not as bad as yours, but its there. Try closing your Lid from the corners for a while :)

LOL... yeah.... all FPS like cod2 and FEAR feels weird with flexing .. This in my first lappy so I'm kinda dissapointed with the keyboard flex... when I play FEAR, I died a lot coz I'm afraid to move left (a) LOL. So now I change the config, not wsad for moving but edsf.... weird....

But I just bought a keyboard protector..It's supposed to protect your keyboard from water spilling, dust, etc. It's from soft plastic, and amazingly, after I installed it, the flex feels like almost dissappear... It's great... but it's not too beautiful to look at. Maybe u could try that on your flexing keyboard mysticgolem
    :)

Btw, gusto, tallshorty and all the other a8j owner... did you happen to change the bluetooth and instant on hotkey to something else using hcontrol or other program?

Ooo... they have the keyboard protector for A8J? I tried to contact a vendor in US, but they didn't have it for ASUS. How much did it cost you?

Ah, kool Tjun thanks for the pic and info, by the way it wasn't my laptop, it was a friend of mine who let me use it during a LAN party.

I was actually looking for something that would cover the laptop keys just like that, how much? 6-5$ :D and do you think it will protect agains't wear and tear of the travel of the keys?

But i can't stress enough, don't use ur laptop keyboard for gaming, use an external keyboard and mouse for gaming, especially if your at home. I recommend some cheap USB keyboard for home use.

I have personally been through 4-6 keyboards and 4-5 mice because of gaming lol!.

You don't want to damage your laptop keyboard, it is kinda under warranty when it does get worn out, but then you have down time and a chance that ASUS may call it physical abuse =\.

    Thanks,

    MysticGolem

    Mysticgolem,

It's cheap coz it's made in china... :) dunno how much it's gonna cost you there. lol. Yeah, it will protect your keyboard against tear and wear during normal use. Just be sure to try it on your lappy before buying it, because some of them are made from hard plastic... not thin and durable enough for typing... I found the most durable and thinnest one after long search and completely satisfied with my choice, doesn't affect typing at all. In fact, it even makes my keyboard flex gone :),typing more easy, and makes my fear of putting a cup of hot coffee beside my lappy gone... maybe not coffee, water... oh.... maybe not completely gone... lol.

Hm... interesting... 5-6 times? haha. I use external mouse while gaming, but not external keyboard... maybe I'll do it from now on... OR maybe I should stop playing fps, just rts that uses mouse only lol.

Hi Tjun, I don't know if its still concerns you, but I had the same keyboard/lid problems with my a8ja and I had it repaired by asus.
They tightened the screws in the lid and I guess they must have put something under the keyboard to stop the flexing on the left end, but they didn't describe how exactly they solved the problem.

Hi Tjun, are you in Indo right now? Or are you still outside Indo? Is the keyboard protector available in Jakarta? I met someone who used that kind of keyboard protector, he said he bought it in Ratu Plaza.
