I ordered the A8JM (PortableOne MX) and will be getting it tomorrow. It comes default w/ XP Home, but I want to put XP Pro on it for the obvious reasons. Would I just have to pop in the CD and run the installation or should I do a reformat? Pop in the CD, and delete the partition w/ the XP Home and format and install XP Pro? What else should I do? Are there Asus specific things I need to install for things to work on it? Plz give me a detailed process, thx.

    Yeah, here's the basic steps:
    - Pop in XP Pro, boot from it
    - Delete partitions if you want, and format
    - XP Pro installs
    - Pop in ASUS Driver & Utility CD
    - Install everything from top to bottom (Except synaptics driver, download it from synaptics site, the one on ASUS CD has some bug)
    - If you want, you can re-partition using PartitionMagic/Gparted/Qparted
    - Voila... there you go :)

You also might want to consider checking if there are newer drivers first for specific components (such as wireless lan, etc etc) before installing the asus specific drivers - No reason not to have the latest stuff! Dont forget a nice antivirus on there

There's an crashing issue with the newer Intel drivers (v10) with HControl... so might wanna skip that. The one from ASUS works fine...

Is there anything but a Windows install w/drivers and stuff on the recovery partition? If I have an XP CD and know how to use it then would there be any disadvantages to getting rid of it?

What crashing issue? I have newest Intel Wireless drivers from www.intel.com and newest HControl from www.asus.com. There no single crash or errors in my system. Using A8Jc.

When i installed XP Pro on my A6 I did a selective install e.g.

-Installed Intel ProWireless drivers but not the program - Windows is fine for managing connections and i dont need to run 5/6 extra process in the background as a result.

-Did not install the Synaptic drivers - the touchpad works fine without them.

-Nor did i install the "wireless console" because i always keep bluetooth off and wireless on. Also, it only works if bluetooth autostarts with windows (which i disabled) and if you use intel prowireless software (which i dont) so it was absolutely useless.

Thats just me, i like my laptop to start up fast but for fewer problems/stability issues just install everything.

YAY!...my laptop just arrived and I love it..I'm on it right now and its extremely fast.

Unfortunately, I can't find my XP Pro cd, so I'm just going to do a fresh install of XP Home and do what you guys suggested. THx

Also...the XP Home cd I have is an older version w/ SP1a - should I use the 1 that came w/ the laptop?

Doesn't matter you have a old or new cd as long as you have a valid product key which let you windows be updatable. At least you have to activate your Windows with your own license before 30 days. Moreover, even you have a SP2 file, you can manually to install it without Internet access.

THx Milestone...I have a quick question about the camera...is there a program I'm supposed to install/download to use it? THe only way I've found to use it is through Control Panel -> Camera Devices, but it seems like the quality isnt as good as it should be and it doesn't have any features. THx
