yes mine reads xd cards.
I have a fuji camera. This is related but vista does not seem to want xd cards to be used for readyboost it wants only sd.
-
I take it you have an a8jS Stamar? Please confirm.
Also, seeing as I use IIS and the like, Vista is not on my books for the near future, so the readyboost is the least of my bothers at this time. -
yes i have an a8js and a fuji camera that uses xd cards and it reads them

I am strongly considering buying this laptop, but the battery life is really slightly too short for me
Does anyone know if there's any possibility of buying either a (generic or not) 9 cell battery that would be compatible with this laptop? Thanks for any info available.

One good thing about the A8 series is the physical size of the battery, when compared to most other laptops, their batteries are really long but thin, making them very awkward to carry.
However, the battery of the a8 series is more like a small book, which is much easier to carry around. Meaning I would suggest purchasing another main battery and carry and swap when you need.
With 2 main batteries your absolute max battery life could hit just over 5 hours, and you can easily hit 4+ hours. So that is what I would recommend for A8 owners looking for more battery life. -
if the battery was any larger it would unbalance the notebook.
So to make a 9 cell theyd have to engineer some way to keep the other side balanced and i doubt theyll do that.
So the battery size is always going to be the same.
If there were enough market for it they could make a higher capacity battery, I mean a non cell type of battery but I dont think thats going to happen either.
I think the a8j is permanently going to have the same battery size. -
is there more on the way ??
-
The A8JP battery is under the front, left side of the keyboard. An extended battery would tip/tilt the keyboard away from the user. Unlike my Compaq (which does have an extended battery), where the battery is in the back and can stick out without intefering with typing and can be elongated enough that it tilts the whole NB solidly toward the user (no tipping or unsteadiness). As Milestone said, the battery is very nicely made so that carrying an extra around is not a problem - not bulky/lumpy. But having to change out batteries after 3-4 hours is a pain. Easier to just plug in if you can.
Coolhamood - best way to find out is to email/call Newegg. -
This probably doesn't belong here, but does anyone know where I could go to buy an A8jp barebones? MileStonePC only seems to offer the js version...
-
all asus ensembles just come boxed one way
-
I understand, but the A8js can be bought in the U.S. either as an ensemble, or as a "built on asus" I believe it is called. The milestonepc website for example offers an A8js that can be customized, not an ensemble. I was merely wondering whether the A8jp can be bought as a "built on asus" in the U.S., or if only the ensemble version is offered.
-
ok
its still an ensemble its not a built on
what they do is open the box for you and take the hard drive out and put another one in for you and keep the old one.
When you consider that its a reasonable price. But its still cheaper to do it yourself.
newegg is the only na seller of the a8jp and they wont do that for you.
You can buy another laptop hd with it though they have a sale on the hitachi 7200 rpm hd for 100$ -
Ahhh, I see. I was confusing the A8js for the barbone compal that I had been looking at on that site. Thanks for the correction.
-
the A8JP is back in stock now in newegg.
-
It sure is, but I don't see any info on the free Vista upgrade.
-
NewEgg doesn't handle the Vista upgrade.
Asus does. There's a link in the Asus forum to the upgrade website. Asus computers are eligible as long as they're purchased between the dates Microsft set forth.
I submitted my upgrade request without any problems. For the day I finally have to upgrade to Vista. -
Nice, what does the up to 512mb mean on the video card.
I ask because I'm torn:
A8JP - $1314 shipped http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16834220104
A8JS - $1429 shipped http://www.powernotebooks.com/configure.php?special=394 -

Basicaly your looking at a 100$ difference in price, I personaly think that a mere 100$ justifies getting the A8js because the Go 7700 512mb is superior to the X1700 256mb.
Hypermemory means that the GPU will take an additional 256mb from your systam ram to help render graphics.
If you like ATI by all means go for the A8jp, if you don't mind eithe, but want to upgrade to 2GB in the futre, the A8js is a better option. -
the A8JS has the better video card. By about 10-15% from what I understand.
Up to 512 means with hypermemory? Not sure. -
yes, but the a8js at powernotebooks lacks BT, and it cannot be added on at their site.. the a8jp has a slightly lower performance GPU ( 90% of us would not notice the difference), and uses 2*512 mb mem, not 1*1gb, so upgrading is a wee bit harder on the p....so pick what you need.
-
amitkc - How is the upgrade of memory harder?
I thought it would be pretty simple to buy 2 sticks of 1GB RAM and plug them in. Is it going to be harder than that? -
I'm considering A8Js & A8Jp along with Sony SZ 330.
Did you notice that A8Js from Powernotebooks says the hard drive is Ultra ATA (PATA)? A8Js from other retailers say SATA.
Anyhow, lucky that you are not from California.
My A8Jp would be $1420 shipped -
It is a 100GB Ultra SATA on the A8JS and the 120GB SATA on the A8JP.
I'm still really down the middle. I don't think I'd use the Bluetooth but it would be nice to have in case I ever did want to use it. It would be nice to stick 1GB of ram extra into the A8JS w/o replacing anything (although I would not do it immediately). The A8JP has the bigger hard drive but inferior Video card. The A8JS comes with XP Pro Vs. Media Center on the A8JP.
All in all they look very comparable with $115 difference in price, I'm just not sure if I think it's worth paying the extra $115 for the better video card and less HD capacity.
PS - I have no favorites with nVidia and ATI, I like them both.
Somone give me some good computer logic to choose one -

If your looking forward to upgrading to 2GB in the future, then it is worth spending a little more for the A8js since you will only need to spend ~100$ more for 1x1GB, whereas in the A8jp you would need to spend ~200 for 2X1Gb and your 2x512mb become useless. (unless you got another laptop).
And if you want bluetooth to be more futureproofed then you have another option. So you may want to have a bluetooth mouse, keyboard, connect to your cellphone via bluetooth. -
I personally went for the A8JS due to the lower cost of moving to 2GB and the 7700 card with the 512MB. When I factored that a)your stuck with your video card (of course until Asus gets that external thing going) and b) add an extra 100 to the P for the 2GB upgrade you are really only saving 100 bucks. For how long it had been since I bought a new computer and that I plan on keeping this for maybe 3, the better card was worth the 100 bucks.
-
Just bought an A8JP! I don't know the last time I was this excited, although now I'm in debt.
A few questions for those who've owned it awhile:
1) Does the laptop (specifically the bottom) get hot? My girlfriend's Viao gets pretty hot with a P-M and is uncomfortable to use on your lap after awhile.
2) Does the laptop have a lot of "flex" to it? My Compaq V2000 creeks when I pick it up and the screen feels flimsy. I hope this Asus is different.
3) Is there anything you don't like about it? I mean aside from the 512x2 RAM and 2.5hr battery life.
Thanks! -

1 Year Global Warranty:

There are two F3F in diffrent sub model numbers and they have diffrent warray. -
Thanks for the knowledge, still thinking about it.
Upgrading to 2gb of Ram cancels out the cost difference for both so the question is do I want the bluetooth more or the better vid card, I'm thinking the better vid card. -
It would be 1gb more ram and bluetooth vs a slighly better video card.
-
But I am thinking it'll be easier to upgrade RAM and Bluetooth in the future than the video card, so I'll go for better video card.
-
models that were introduced before all ensembles switched to a 2 year warrantee are still 1 year warrantee. And those are still for sale.
I dont know the date but all of them after a certain date have a 2 year warrantee including this a8jp -
-
heh ok so we know that but trying to get back to the coherent point ( which was weeks ago at least)
the user is asking about the a8jp, and newegg says it has a 1 year warranty. Its newegg that is mistaken. the a8jp has a 2 year global warranty
and dont buy neweggs warranty. -
-
Man, thought I may be the first one to notice it was back in stock. I guess its old news already. Oh well, I've been waiting to order one for a while. Happy shopping all.
-
I placed my order for the A8jp last night..seems like they are still in stock, which means that they arent being snapped up at the pace i expected they would be.
The A8jp does have a 2 yr warranty as stamar mentioned. For those torn between the s and the p (as i was), you really have to decide if you willever REALLY NEED ( not want, NEED) 2 Gb of RAM and a hi end video card ( for a 14" laptop???!?!?!?!). The upgrade to 2gb is cheaper (not easier..sorry ) on the s, but the extra 200 bones for it is not justified for me.
Bluetooth , larger HDD and 200 less dollars is more imp to me, all other things being the same. Hope this helps the fencesitters, since i was one until last night. Pick your poision, and stick with it! -
slightly off topic, but since i bought the laptop, is this a good sleeve for it? its on sale for 7.50!
http://meritline.stores.yahoo.net/17-laptop-sleeve-case-208.html
ITs for 17" laptops, so it wont be as snug as id prefer, but if anyone with an A8j out there has a sleeve for it, care to link us to the product page?
TIA! -
They should be in stock for quite a while. They got a lot more than 100 with this new shipment.
-
I put myself on the e-mail notify when it popped back into stock, and actually I was surprised it did. I thought maybe they were running a limited-stock limited-time offer when I first saw it at the end of December.
So, I ordered one yesterday. Great deal imho. Much better deal than I would've gotten with a dv2000t HP I was looking at getting. Same specs w/ the Geforce 7200 was still going to be a hair more than the ASUS even after my student discount.
We'll see how it goes, I'm not crazy about the looks like I was about the HP, but for that price with those specs, I'll just have to live with it
I'll post a review when I get it up and running. I'm assuming it will be here Thursday sometime. Yay! -

For those of use looking to upgrade to 4GB it doesn't really matter
(although I will wait for 2GB chips to come down in price). RAM prices and availability will probably get worse after Vista ships at the end of the month and everyone upgrades.
-
Awesome. I just ordered one of these from Newegg. I also ordered 2 1GB sticks of Patriot 667Mhz ram. It added around $200 to the price, but there is a $15 rebate on the ram and I should also get at least $80 on ebay for the RAM that will come with the laptop. So, in the end, the upgrade to 2 gigs should set me back no more than $100.
Now I'm thinking of buying one of these:

What do you guys think? -

TRy out the free bag for a while...

Hi guys,
Pretty new to the forums but ordered my lifetime second laptop today. It's the German A8JP, and it cost me about €1350 ($1750). It's pretty steep but that's what I have to pay for it. The A8JS would've been €1650 and I believe that the performance of A8JP is plenty for me.
The laptop will hopefully be here in Finland sometime next week and I'm eager to get my hands on it. Have been planning this for like 4 months and it feels pretty good when it's finally ordered. The things I'm a bit concerned are the build quality and battery life but thanks to you guys and NBR-review I now know what I'm gonna get. I think it's a great deal for a good laptop. Could do a review too but I'm not native English (as you might have notised) and someone has already done one so maybe we'll just get our own "owners lounge". Also looking for a good sleeve but havent yet found one. There's one that is made bu Targus but it's originally for 13.3".
Cheers -
I pulled the trigger tonight on the A8JP the feature set, and price point are second to none compared to anything out there. I checked pretty much all brands IMHO.
-
has newegg processed anyone's order yet?
I ordered before COB Pacific Time on Fri, and with the MLK holiday yest, seems that they are still backed up and have not even gotten past Step 1 of their 5 step process.
This is aggravating. GRRRR.
Anyone else have an update from newegg on when they plan on shipping the new batch? -
might want to contact customer service. The notebooks are in stock.
-
seeing as this is the first business day since Fri evening when I posted the order, I dont want to rush cust service.. I know quite a few people here put in for one, so Id like to know if its just me, or are they playing catch up...they do claim a 1-2 business day "processing time"..
-
I always pay the rush order process for the extra 2.99, and it always ship on the same day. I ordered late last night and this evening i was at status 5 and recieved my tracking to.
If you dont use rush it will always take a business day or 2 even I would check with there live chat online.
