The fn+f9 doesn't work (does it for you?) though other fn+x functions do.

In my control panel/mouse there is no option for disabling the touchpad though I could do away with the usb mouse I prefer to use (until I get a bluetooth mouse).

The issue is that my cursor will now and again jump up and about and text will appear where it shouldn't while I'm typing.

I've tried a little prog touchpadfreeze (didn't work) and I've enabled mouse cursor while typing. I still get the jumping cursor now and again.

Have you shut down the touchpad in your a8jp?

    Thanks!

You are having a common touchpad problem. Have you tried the palm check settings in the control panel? This is designed to help with your troubles. Turn those up, and see if it helps.

Two options. Both on the "Device Settings" tab of Mouse Properties (in Control Panel):

    1. Tick the box "Disable internal pointing device when external USB pointing device is attached". This automatically turns off the touchpad when you plug in either a wired USB mouse or a BT mouse; or

    2. Click on the Settings button on that tab, it will open an options box that looks like a "help" program. Click "Sensitivity" in the left-hand pane, then Palm Check.

There are a bunch of advanced options you can adjust in the Settings, which most folks don't even look at.

    control panel/mouse:

My mouse tabs are buttons/pointers/pointer options/wheel/hardware.

I don't see any options that you refer to.

Going in to device manager doesn't give me the options I want either.

I'm running the xp media that came with the a8jp (reinstall).

Thanks. I'm a little puzzled at the moment.

It sounds like the Synaptics drivers for your touchpad did not get installed or are corrupt.

I'd recommend downloading and installing the newest version either from Asus downloads or from www.synaptics.com. Best to download from Asus to avoid any compatibility issues. Download and install. Then return to your mouse properties in Control Panel and you should see a tab then.

I'm running sthe same setup as you - WinXP Home that came with the NB.

I installed the synanptics drivers and was able to turn off the touchpad.

    Thanks sanpabloguy and caleb.

Hopefully my cursor will stop jumping. If not, I'll be back....

It won't be jumping any more, it was jumping because you were touching the touchpad while typing.

Well I hope so. BTW, as I was trying to figure this jumping cursor problem out I typed with my hands floating above the keys and just my fingers touching them. The cursor would disappear and the next keystroke would send the cursor off and running. I assumed that just my pressing the keys was nudging the touchpad. So far with touchpad off all has been correct--no problems writing this post.

Glad that everything worked out. The disappearing cursor is another mouse setting.

Under Mouse Properties | Pointer Options, there's an option to "Hide Pointer While Typing". If you like to see the pointer, you can untick it.
