Hey guys, first post here. I have been browsing the foruns for weeks, and all the information finally has lead be to the Asus A8JS. I couldn't be happier...except..the screen issue.
So I boot for the first time, and I can see the light leakage all across the bottom of the screen. As I predicted, Everest tells me I have the AUO screen.
I bought mine from Danny at Milestonepc and he's been a great help. After a couple of phone calls back and forth, he says that he's seen one in person, and it looks fine, in fact the AUO is better. He also had a customer state the same thing.
I can't see how the screen I got is good at all? Maybe its because I haven't adjusted to it yet, or maybe I have a lemon.
Does anyone with the Asus A8JS AUO screen have a light leakage "bar" across the bottom of the screen? I can take pics later for better clarification. I also notice that trying to get the right viewing angle is almost impossible. I compared my screen to my friends HP dv2000t. His is miles ahead, no noticable leakage, good viewing angles.
Did I get a lemon? Anyone with an Asus A9JS please weigh in. Pics of another A8JS AUO screen would help me compare, as I have no one near me who even knows abouts Asus =).

What model of the A8JS do you have? Did it come with XP or Vista?
-
Asus Notebook A8Js-4S023P with Bluetooth
Came with XP Pro, with voucher for Asus Vista Upgrade Event -
Light leakage almost always exists, and as you already know, as the panel is lower quality. That's a main reason why this notebook has such a nice price tag. A screen can account for almost 20-30% of a notebook's cost, which is probably the case for this notebook. Cheaper LCD but godly spec's, if I can compare it that way.
Perhaps a picture of the screen can help. -
I'll post a picture when I get home from work later.
To better describe it, the light bar is really noticable on darker backgrounds, for instance, on the windows loading screen.
It looks like 3/4 inch "bar" of white going across the bottom of the screen. -
If you read through this forum and read all the posts on the A8JS LCD you will see a lot of people complaining about the AUO screen. I've seen at least 20 different people complain about it and probably a big chunk of those appear to be very dissatisfied with it. Also note, though, that some people have said the AUO screen is fine and very bright.
As for the CMO, most people seem to love it. I think I have seen 2-3 people who thought it was could be brighter. -
Yea, I noticed that about the AUO posts, which leads me to believe that maybe there are two versions of the AUO?
Does anyone else with the AUO have the "light bar" across the bottom of the screen? -
The 24 models all have the CMO screen. The 34 models all have the AUO screens. This has been talked about over and over in the forum. If you get the 34 model from zipzoomfly or milestone, you are bound to get the AUO screen and as bright/clear as that screen may be, A LOT of people have complained about the light leakage on it. The people with the CMO screens, myself included, don't have a problem with it. I have almost no light leakage and find the screen to be plenty bright.
-
So then is there any place on the internet that sells CMOs consistently? Some of the newegg reviews are complaining about their screens, while some are praising it.
-
-
Hm, maybe if I send my screen into Asus for warranty they will replace it?
-
Like I said, if its a 24, then you will get CMO, if its a 34, you will get AUO. I haven't read a single post in this forum that contradicts that.
-
From what others have said, I don't think you will be able to get the lcd replaced by Asus.
-
Ive seen the screen on the dv 2000
And its light years worse. Not even in the same ballpark. It is so dim, lower resolution obviously.
But pull out something like ms paint and do one pixel. You cant even see it its murky. Cant read small print.
Its terrible in comparison.
Now, it has a better viewing angle absolutely.
Light leakage I cant tell you. I have light leakage on the bottom but its in the middle.
If seen a few pictures of a8js screens that were bad. They were worse than mine. Ive seen a few that were a little better too. -
I guess I will stick it out, I think I am getting used to it. I have to say, the screen is crisp when its in the "sweet spot". I find that it either dims on the bottom or top when it moves past that certain angle.
Does this sound like your screen? -
yes it does.
-
I've emailed gentech and they say all the current shipment of A8JS-4S024C that they have are AUO LCDs. This screen problem is really troubling me since I do not want to end up with a bad screen. So, I am looking at buying a Sony SZ unless a seller can guarantee it's a CMO screen or take a return if it's not. -
-
Interesting because some people who have recently purchased that model have confirmed the CMO LCD. -
-
The screen on the sony sz looks like crap in comparison to the auo screen.
I mean I think it even has a worse viewing angle, its about 20% dimmer. Its terrible by all ways you can rate it in comparison but you want to get it.
I mean get the cmo screen if you can I dont want to confuse you. But if you cant get it youre going to spite yourself and get a terrible screen you can hardly even read in comparison.
I just shake my head about all this stuff sometimes I think shoppers are really misled by this forum
Ive got to make this clear. The screens on the a8js and a8jp are the best wide notebook screens 14 inch and under on PLANET EARTH! I LOOKED AT ALL OF THEM!!!!!!!!!! ( except led displays)
In general 15.4 inch screens are better.
So Im saying to whoever needs the information that joe blow who comes to the asus forum and complains about some light leakage or whatever doesnt know what hes talking about. Respectfully. -
I went through this dilemna a couple of weeks ago but established, here in Hong Kong, ALL new A8Js's came with AUO screen. Looked a several in computer malls and decided to go for it anyway, the spec is very good. I won't disagree and light leakage along the bottom is noticeable, especially at boot-up, but it is a very bright screen and sharp as a razor. I am really pleased with it and this light leakage is not an issue with most applications.

Since the laptop cannot be returned for a refund, I guess the only way is to see the screen for myself before buying. But, alas, there's no place here near Washington DC to go at look at one. BestBuy seems to be having only the G1. I just don't want to 'blindly' invest in something expensive that I cannot return for a refund without taking a look first, especially since there are many people complaining bitterly about it. -
ya actaully the person who replaced it wiht a 1280 x 800 lg screen is the weirdest story.
Because thats a very old screen and when dell switched to auo screens you can look in the dell forum of everyone returning their dell latitudes to get teh auo screen which made the lg look like crap.
You know this year auo overtook lg and samsung to become the worlds largest lcd maker, and its because they have way fewer defects.
It just shows some level of something thats hard to explain and I may have to coin a word for it. But basically, forum bs hysteria. Dont get caught up in it. When people get their new screen they may put it down but then you never hear from them again when they get used to it.
Oh ya the a8js screen is much brighter than the g1 screen. But the g1 screen has better viewing angles and is just plainly better -
I think it is pretty clear that there is a wide range in the quality of screens used. Forums are a hysteria, but many posts are still valid complaints. In my opinion, people have a right to complain about a computer's screen, since it is the one part of the computer that you are staring at for hours on end.
Who is the person who replaced his screen with an LG one? I myself am disappointed with the screen on my a8jp and am wondering if there is anything I can do about it other than sell it. -
If your lcd has defects it might be bad. I dont deny defects I think owners should pull together to try and teach eachother what a defect might be.
There is not a wide range of quality of screens used, there are two. And they are going to be virtually identical.
You actually have the one thats most likely to have the fewest defects its made by cmo, a medium upscale brand mostly known for viewsonic monitors. -
The screen on my a8jp is by CMO, and it has a sparkly-looking anti-glare coating so strong that it drives me nuts every times I look at a white screen, but it is normal for the screen. Most other owners are certain that they dont have this problem (which I assume is because they have a different variation of the CMO screen), and it appears as if all a8jps use CMO screens.
But this thread is about the a8js so I don't want to derail the topic... -
This theory of yours is possible but I dont have any data to back up that any lcd of the same manufacturing code is any different than any others.

Hello All,
I am the (lunatic?) that replaced my AUO panel with an LG panel. Please note that the LG panel is 1440x900. The primary reason I did this was the AUOs viewing angle which I found to be unacceptably limited. I believe this is due to the polarizing / anti glare filter on the AUO panel. I speculate that the differences that people genuinely detect with the AUO panels may be due to differences between production batches; not with the actual panels but with the polarizers applied by AUO. Before I pulled the AUO and replaced it with the LG I noticed significant differences in the AUOs clarity and color reproduction depending on the viewing environment, i.e. ambient lighting (type and brightness). BTW the LG panel has suited my needs much better that the AUO. But thats just my opinion...

I've had my A8JS for about 6 months now and viewing angles are not something you get used to. If you want to be able to see stuff clearly and undistorted other than perfectly centered to the screen... don't buy this laptop.

I don't see how someone can claim the Sony SZ screen is worse than the AUO. I went from a 2-year old Sony S360 (predecessor to the SZ) to the A8Js.
I color calibrate all my screens with a Monaco XR Pro colorimeter. After the calibration, it lets you run a test where it displays different color patches on the screen, measures them, compares the measured against what was supposed to be displayed, and generates a number characterizing the deviation (error delta). It combines these deltas for the ~35 color patches into a single error delta number. 0 is perfect, 1-3 is very good (I can barely see the differences in color patches), 3-5 is ok (some of the differences are noticable), 5+ is poor (the difference in color patches is obvious).
My Dell 2405FPW 24" LCD consistently gets error deltas of 1.3-1.7.
My Sony S360 got error deltas of 3-4.
My uncalibrated (due to a driver issue) Thinkpad T41 got error deltas of 9-11.
My A8Js with an AUO screen gets error deltas of 7-7.5. And I had to run the calibration in advanced mode (calibrates 100 color samples instead of 24) to get it even that low.
Bear in mind my S360 is at least 4 generations old now, and the screens I've seen on the recent SZ series blow the S360 screen away in brightness, clarity, and color accuracy. Yes the AUO screen is brighter than my Sony, but the color rendition on the AUO absolutely sucks. I had to go back to using my Sony for a day and it was like I had just wiped my glasses with lens cleaner. If the A8Js didn't have a DVI connector and two LUTs (the laptop's LCD and external DVI LCD can both display with different calibrated color profiles simultaneously - surprised me that it had this feature) and I didn't have the Dell 2405FPW, I would've returned the A8Js immediately. -
I really have no idea what your test really displays or if its relevant.
But Ill try to find it and run it on mine to see if it shows something different than yours.
I held my a8js next to a sony sz in staples., and theres no comparing it. Sony sz is extremely murky and fuzzy.
I cant think of a quantity where it actually compares. I can find you the exact screen used even, its a samsung and the manufacturers stats show its very unfavorable.
It is about, if not the, worst looking screen on a sony notebook.
You are thinking of the sz premium.
If you have a 4 year old sony laptop, its lcd was made by sony. I have no doubt that one is very good
A8JS Screen problems, I think?
