    It just happened after I made changes to my system from msconfig (disabled everything in the startup list). After the restart, I played C&C3 for a while and then suddenly my system shuts down itself!! I couldn't power it on again and it just kept trying to power on then off then on then off!!.. So I didn't know how to stop it and just closed the lid (well that stopped it) then I touched the exhaust and it was REALLY HOT!! I think its because the fan stopped working? (I hardly notice because it is quiet all the time).. most probably it is because something forced it to shut from overheating.

    I usually have NHC running but when I play games I always shut it off along with every other stuff in the system tray and such (just don't want anything to hinder my gameplay).

    So my question is are there any startups in the list that I should not disable or take the mark off in msconfig for the A8Js? I did not touch anything else except marking off all the stuff in the startup tab. Is this a known problem with A8JS' fan or not? (i think I've read about it somewhere here before). It seems to shut off my fan or something like that. This is the first time it happened to me, I hope it didn't damage my notebok :( .. i'm really freaked out. Are there anything I should not do in msconfig, plz advise me.

    Well, whenever you're not sure about what a program in the startup is for, the rule of thumb is: you shouldn't mess with it.

    Reenable all the stuff back, and then disable only what you know about. Examples include:
    Media checkers from Nero etc.
    Adobe Gamma Launcher
    Automatic Updaters

    Examples of what you should NOT remove are:
    ATK/ACPI utilities
    Antivirus
    Firewall

    Thanks E.B.E. I shouldn't have turned those ATK/ACPI utilities off (HControl). Out of all the stuff on the startup list I know about every single one of them except these:

    NvCpl = ???
    TINTSETP (/SYNC) = ???
    TINTSETP (IMEName) = ???
    nwiz (nwiz.exe install) = ???
    ctfmon = ???
    RunDLL32 = ???

    so if anyone could give me a short input on them of what they are, it'll be great so I would have an idea what they do.

    NvCpl I have that also, I do not know I suspect it is related to the NVidia driver (driver helper)

    TINTSETP -- I do not know I do not have that.
    nwiz -- system utility, do not turn off
    ctfmon -- I don;t know, never turned it off
    Rundll32 -- system utility, do not turn off

    nwiz is nView Desktop Manager, which is pretty useless and can be turned off.

    tintsetp is a process which belongs to Microsoft Language Support (IME). This program is a non-essential process, but should not be terminated unless suspected to be causing problems. It's required for essential applications to work properly.

    ctfmon is a process belonging to Microsoft Office Suite. It activates the Alternative User Input Text Input Processor (TIP) and the
    Microsoft Office XP Language Bar. This program is a non-essential system process, but should not be terminated unless suspected to be causing problems. It's required for essential applications to work properly. Could be a trojan though, so look it up. Determining whether ctfmon.exe is a virus or a legitimate Windows process depends on the directory location it executes or runs from. (google is you friend)

    Rundll32 is for letting some dlls run as programs. Something in your startup runs through it. It usually states what in either location, manufacturer or description. If it's something you want or need, or if you don't know what it launches, don't touch it.

    Nah, ctfmon is safe, I've had it on all my installs. I wouldn't worry about it.

    I know, it's been safe on all of mine as well. Just thought that he should know. Besides, i didn't write tintsetp or ctfmon, i just copied them from a site with the info, and thought that adding that would help.

    Yes, I believe it can. I have done it anyways, and nothing seems wrong. That's a nVidia driver file by the way.

    fabarati.. since I see you're using the same laptop, mind as well ask you about bluetooth and infrared red.. does it turn on normally by itself while booting? My case is that bluetooth always blink when booting but then after I boot into windows the only thing that turns it off is wireless console 2 after startup has been loaded (I've set it to turn off both the wireless and bluetooth), if I turned WC2 off from startup.. I'll have to manually press the function key to it turn off myself. Are there any ways I could have WC2 not turned on in start up hence also have the bluetooth and wireless turned off? I'd like to turn them on myself if I have the need to use them. Also another problem is the infrared red, I dunno how to turn it off.. keeps on blinking red since boot, which programs/utility is used to turn this one off for good?

    Respect.

    I'm not sure if I understand what you mean, but I'll give it a shot. Also, I don't quite remember what everything does and how it does them. WC2 controls if wifi and BT is on or off when you boot and inside windows. You need it for direct media buttons to work properly (or something like that). It also makes sure that BT its not onb when you boot (and maybe wifi as well). Alternatively, it makes sure that the same settings it was when it was turned off is used when you turn it on (when you shutdown, BT is off and wifi on, so when you startup, BT is off and wifi is on). I'm not sure which one of those it does, but either way, BT should be off while booting. What you can do is uninstall WC2, reboot and reinstall.

    About IR: I'm not sure why it blinks (has never done that for me), but if you want to shut it down completley (if you know you won't use it) there are two things you have to do: open up the control panel>administrative tools>computer management and go to device manager in the list to the left. There find the IR-device and disable it (the hardware is now not in use). Then in the list to the left got services, find Infrared monitor and open it's properties. There set the service from Automatic to disabled (or possibly inactive, not sure since I have XP in swedish) and then stop the device. VoilĂ , no more IR.

    Sorry if my last post was a bit confusing, what I meant was that my BT starts blinking when starting windows but then it stops after entering windows (after startup has loaded WC2 automatically to stop BT from going on). I'm just looking for a way to stop BT from blinking or going on at all without the use of WC2 (because I want to disable it by msconfig from startup) I don't know if thats possible because you just said that WC2 is needed the media key to work properly.

    The thing is.. I'm using my laptop for recording music and I usually go straight to work. Startups that are not in use should be disabled and BT, IR, WLan, Wireless interferes with the recording data (sometimes creates a bit of hum and noises).. So thats y I really need them to be all off but not totally disable them.
    BUT I just managed to turn IR off for good from your method :) thanks! (I really don't use this one)

    So I think the simplest way to get them all off is to disable them from device manager? and then enable them by the time I need to use it?.. I don't use any BT peripherals and most probably if the only time I would use it is to send data to another PC/notebook.

    What else could you suggest?
    I will uninstall WC2 and reinstall it again, hopefully it should keep BT from blinking when starting windows.. so then I can use msconfig to stop WC2 from startup.

    The way i remember it working was that WC turned the bluetooth radio off completely (no or minimal powerusage), meaning no light. That's how it was in vista anyway. I've just come back to XP because of some of the applications i need doesn't work with vista yet. Then you can manually launch the BT manager instead of it being in the startup. If reinstalling WC doesn't work, uninstall WC, BT-software/drivers and wifi-software/drivers. Then reinstall, with WC first then the other two.

    I've tried everything.. couldn't stop BT from lighting up no matter what.. so I decided to disable them :( sigh...
    which drivers are you using for ur BT?
    I'm using Bluetooth_XP_060831 from Asus' site, its a toshiba BT stack driver or some sort.

    My notebook came installed with Vista and everything worked fine before, function keys all working, BT and IR stays put, all lights come up when pressed but then yeah.. some programs I use don't run on Vista so I've come to use XP again.

    Anyways have you ever have this happen to you
    "Warning Message: Unable to load the INTEL Muroc API, This function need to install INTEL Proset utility" is it necessary to install the intel proset utility for this wireless function key (the one between the BT and Splendid key) to work properly? I've done it before but found it to be a hassle to use.

    I'm not sure. I think i'm using the ones on my XP driver-cd. You can try the latest version of the toshiba stack (that's what i used the last time i ran XP on el lappytop). LINKY
