Hello all,
I just received my A8JS. This is my first ASUS laptop. I used IBM, TOSHIBA and SONY before.
There is nothing to complain about its power. Very fast.
My concern is the plastic case. I believe my people like to carry a laptop with only one hand holding the rear edge. Me too. When I do so, I notice that black plastic part between the two LCD hinges is obviously deflected. Actually, this part is most easily deflected part on the cover since it has no support from the lower part at all.
I am wondering if this will be potential hazard to the internal LCD light tube? I think the light tube is just around that place. The deflection is really big for stable one-hand holding.
I think most ASUS laptops has plastic case. Have this problem been observed on other models and caused any damage to the light tube?
Thanks

I don't know about breaking the LCD light tube, but I would never carry any laptop with only one hand. What if you were to drop it? To the point where you see something abnormal on a comp is NOT a good thing. It'll probably shorten the life of the notebook itself anyways.
IMHO, that's my suggestion. -
ive carried my a8js with one hand.
when its closed i carry it from the front
Im not sure exactly what youre doing though. -
I also prefer to carry my laptop with both hands, however once in a while i grab it with one hand, an if i do so, it is closed and i grab it from the front - not the rear.

if you had a 3 lb laptop carry it with your foot if you want. That is a 5.5lb laptop you have there. Expect it to bend in places where you apply pressure especially with one hand. In any case the lid is posed to bend......its plastic!

Normally, the rear is thicker than the front on a laptop. Grabbing the rear part can hold the unit more firmly. One-hand carrying sometime is necessary for a portable 14' notebook,e.g., you walk out a room with a coffee or files in the other hand. Anyway, plastic case is realy not a good choice for notebook. I will try to carry it with both hand. My next purchase must be one made with alloy or polycarbonate.
I'm not regretting buying A8JS. ASUS really know how to make a powerful computer. But they have a long way to go to make a well-balanced portable. Here are some flaws I found:
1. Sticky touchpad. Very slightly sweating can prevent smooth movement of your finger.
2. The left and right button below the touchpad are really hard to press.
3. Very poor sound quality of the speaker.
4. Light leakage from the bottom of the LCD.
5. Windows media play cannot play DVD continuously, and no video playback. Though the ASUS DVD software works. (This is also reported on ASUS's offical forum by other users)
6. Flimsy case.
All above has nothing to do with power. They are user-interface, which makes a laptop elegant. -
I would not carry it from the back because you are putting pressure on the hinges in a way they are not meant to absorb
from the front you are too but it has the lenght of the lcd cover to absorb it
if its open carrying it with one hand from the front is fine. Its not meant to be carried like you are describing, even if it was made from metal. because its thicker isnt what enters into it, there is a space between the lcd and the bottom chassis and you are clamping it.
5. It doesnt have dvd function without windows. The asus media play thing is sort of like false advertising I think they concocted to come up with a use for those buttons that are there that dont do anything. uninstall that program its worthless and actually causes problems with turning it off. -
Windows Media Player won't play DVDs unless you have WinDVD or PowerDVD (Asus DVD is just PowerDVD OEM) installed so it can use the codec... So that is a Windows Media Player problem, not an Asus problem.
A8JS flexible LCD cover-a potential hazard to light tube?
