Sorrie for intruding and all with the G1S hype going on here :p
I just need ask some questions about this MAT****A DVD-RAM UJ-850S drive I have in my A8JS..

First off.. I've been wanting to know about this for a long time about these plus and negative sign in front, what do othey mean?
    -R, -RW, +R, +RW
( sorrie for this really newb question  haven't been writting CDs or DVDs much )

On the sticker of the drive it says DVD Multi recorder (DVD Sup.MTI. I presume)
RW DVD + R DL? I'm not sure what this meant
is it able to write on DVD +/-RW and dual layer DVDs?

Any help of clarifying this for me would be greatful. Thanx.

Minus is an older standard, + a newer one. But your optical drive can write both formats, no worries.

I think it can write dual layer but I have never really tried it. I don't presume you'll need it either -- dual layer blanks are very expensive, more expensive than the 2 normal DVDs that make up a dual-layer DVD capacity. They are typically used for the video DVDs that you buy in the store.

You got it right. It can write to -RW or +RW DVDs, and dual layer DVDs. It can also write to DVD-RAM.

Thankyou guys so much.. that clears it up for me
for you guys that have the MAT****A DVD-RAM UJ-850S.. which brands of DVD -/+RW or Dual Layer DVD or DVD-RAM do you guys mostly use that works on it? Does it also support DVD+RW DL?

I've just tried using Pleomax(samsung) PLEO DVD+R 8x and it works just fine but write speed turns out to be only 4x not like 8x it says on the disc, or could I set this up for 8x in Nero?

    Regards.

Laptop optical drives usually write much slower than desktop ones... 4x might be the limitation of the drive.

I typically use Verbatim DVDs, otherwise I try to find TDK, otherwise whatever brand I get my hands on (except things like Trashdata... uh, sorry Traxdata :D Princo and all the other nonames).

I've had bad experiences with Princo for CD-Rs and never bought them again, its really a crapshoot for these things.
BTW I have no idea about the write speed of this drive but I've seen the specs says 8x somewhere else, thats why I'm wondering if it could go up to 8x so if anyone with the same drive.. could please tell me what are its strengths and limitations, whats the maximum write speed for it?

It has different write speeds for different types of media (DVD: +R, +RW, -R, -RW, DL, RAM) and yet again another set for CDs.

You could search google for the specs sheet... but the max speed displayed by Nero when you insert a particular type of media is the correct speed.

If I were you I wouldn't worry anymore about it, just write DVDs whenever I needed to. :)
