I've never connected an external monitor to a laptop. I was looking at one of these for my A8Jm:

    (probably the first one)

Do I just plug it in? Will it recognize that monitor as the default, or will I have to change a setting every time I turn on the computer? I'm running Vista if that changes anything.

    Thanks

Not hard, just plug it in(DVI or VGA, better quality the former), and press FN+F8 to change it to external CRT only, and the LCD will turn off and power the external LCD.

Or you can have both the LCD and the eternal going at the same time.

Or you can use Nvidia tools do run dual screens

As gusto5 mentioned, using the video drivers, you can easily customize different uses, dual screen, single screen, etc.
