Anybody install the new 208 BIOS yet? I downloaded it but haven't had time to install it. Wonder if it fixes the InstantON problem.

This is gay, im on ac power and my fan is permanently on. As per asus instructions i need to load optimal defaults, that option is not even present in my bios. power4gear is set one quiet office, which previously turned the fan off.

ok im on battery now fan is still on, this is gay, im gonna switch back to old bios now.

EDIT: How can i switch back to the older bios. I have downloaded it from the Asus website, but winflash doesnt allow me to install it. Help!

Just updated bios of my a8ja. Can confirm that the instant-on does not work. Also as zydus wrote, there is no load optimal defaults as stated on asus support site, so i used load user defaults. Fan feels kinda the same as before, but i m running on ac and in high performance.
I am not sure if winflash allows downgrading, maybe check with asus support centers??

Just check with asus support, in newer bios updates choosed load manufacturers defaults.
zydus, if u wanna downgrade the bios gotta do it through dos. winflash doesnt support downgrading. hope it helps.

Zydus... I thought in Easy Flash, u just had to select the older file (A8JAS.207) and it would flash it back to the old version.

Sorry u had so much trouble... I should've tried it on my own before posting anything on the forums...

is Easy Flash another program that can be used? Asus comes with WIN FLASH. I installed nbprobe from teh asus website. The fan spins at a constant 3200rpm, its not loud, but just annoying, even when cpu temp is at 42 degrees. If anyone has a older version of winflash which allows for flashing back to a previous version please pm me.

    Thanks

PS. Dont worry darrick, someone had to do it. Besides it will let me check out how ASUS support is :)

Zydus: Easy (or EZ) Flash is the one you access from BIOS (just make sure u have a copy of the 207 bios on hard drive, doesn't allow running it from CD). Did you try this already?

ps. ASUS support... is... so so.. I called in about the InstantON button and haven't had much help from them at all..

I tried that through my bios, when i went to C: or D: it said Disk I/O error :S Im not sure why. I have both 207 and 208 in C:\ not inside any folders nothing. It doesnt allow me to type either.

    Off Topic!

Hey Darrick.. Zydus.. the 7600 uses 256mb of dedicated RAM, the remaining 256mb is turbocache (system RAM) which is the Nvidia equivilant of Hypermemory from ATI. I think this is especially important for Darrick to know because this is a common misconception and he has applied this inacurate information to his review. :)

PS. The X1600 from ATI also only has 256mb of dedicated memory and has an additional 256mb of hypermemory. It is imporant to note that neither of these cards would benifit from an extra 256mb of dedicated memory, as this memory would barely if ever be used!

Ok spoke to Asus support a fellow called John. Im happy :D There was a slight language barrier, but it took him abt 3 minutes to look up his documentation and helped me out, perfectly :). Now I am able to switch back and forth between teh bios and i've installed nbprobe so ill tell u the difference.

This is what i know about the thermal policy.
    1) 207: the fan starts spinning at 3200rpm when the cpu reaches 51+ degrees.
    2) 208: the fan starts spinning at 3200rpm when the cpu reaches approx 43+ degrees.

So either can suit you, but since the danger level seems to be 90 i have no problems with my cpu idling between 48 - 53, with the fan switching on and off as opposed to the fan being permanently on, and simply blowing out cool air. The HDD temperature doesnt seem to have a major change. Neither does the VGA, maybe during gaming might run a bit cooler, but i dont think the fan ever spun faster than 3200rpm in regular use.

To make winflash ignore the date of the bios, so that you can revert to an older one from cmd goto the winflash folder and run ..\program files\ASUS\WINFLASH> winflash /nodate

Hope it helps you guys out

Buddie: from what I've read and seen, the A8Jm is 512 dedicated, no TC ? Can you point me out to your sources. If so, I'll have to change it in my review....

    Thanks

Just testing with 3dmark05 my cpu went up to 61degrees. I dont think its any cause for concern but can someone check their A8J to see what temp their cpu reaches while running 3dmark. Ill go to the newere bios and check temperatures sometime tonight as well.

Mine only peaked at around 56-57, but i do have lower frequency ram, and less of it.

am i reading that the bios update is not necessary? ive had some crappy experiences with bios updates

my laptop is an A8Ja but it's the same
i had upgraded to 208 thus the fan all the time althoughthe cpu was around 42°C, GPU at 38°C etc ...

so i decided to go back to 207 but now my CPU never goes under 47°C and the GPU is always around 48 ... and so i have the fan that triggers every minute or almost.

i use Everest to know the temperatures, maybe it's biased i don't know but one sure thing is i never go above 51°C and the fan starts anyway

No, definitely not Merom - perhaps for the new T2700 release? Merom BIOS will have to wait until after the chip is released, so Asus' engineers can then muck with it and then come up with an update fix. Can't come up with a bios until you have the hardware to work with for QC.

No, it's for the new Yonah CPUs that only support a 533 MHz FSB (as opposed to the current 667MHz FSB).

i wasn't saying the BIOS gave support for Merom now.
but upon release it shouldn't take too long, as they *should* already be working on it

Well, unless you're running multiple logins to get around your negative rep, I wasn't replying to you, but rather to Bbc84.

None the less, you are correct that Asus "*should* already be working on it". Actualy, I have no doubt they have a BIOS ready to go with Core 2 Duo support. Given their status as, what, number three or four on the list of largest notebook manufacturors, I'm certain they were early recipients of engineering samples.

It was an unnecessary and uncalled for snipe, for which I am sorry.
