I was wondering what other A8J users do to maximize battery life. I want to store my battery when my laptop is plugged in, but it's part of the laptop outside framework. Does Asus sell a cover that can replace where the batter sits? Any other people have tips about this? Thanks.

Asus gives a 1 year warranty for its batteries.
If you plan on keeping the laptop on AC for an extended amount of time without needing the battery. Then you will want to charge the battery at ~40% and then store it in a relatively cool spot.

For most users that take their notebook with them, they will keep the battery in while using it on AC.

The Battery runs about 3 hours or more on Vista with light usage. (Word processing), dimmed screen.

No, Asus doesn't sell a dummy cover or plug for the battery. And they don't sell extended batteries. I generally just leave my battery in all the time, including while on AC. About once a week, I'll let it run down (unplug the AC). When it hits 25% or less, I plug the AC back in. Haven't noticed any battery charge/drain changes in 4 months of use.

I also bought a Powerpack from Batterygeek. Which gives me an additional 5 hours of power after the battery runs down (standard stuff: med. bright screen, email, web, Word, Excel - no movies, CD burning, or other power-intensive tasks). Great for travelling or power outages.

My battery manages 2h 25 mins approx with web surfing and 2/16 brightness (powersaver). To maximise battery life, i tweaked XP to reduce its hard drive accesses, and lowered the power usage for wireless. I also had no accessories attached to any USB ports when it runs on battery.

Remove Power4Win. Under that, I'd get about 2.5 hours on the powersaver mode. Under XP-only power management, that increases to over 3 hours. With the help of NHC, I've pushed it to 3.5 hours with NHC controlling the fans, brightness on 2 or 3 and only websurfing (wirelessly).

I'm not exagerating. Dumping Power4 gave me an extra hour of battery life. And before anyone claims I just got a good battery, NHC reports 52200 mWh. That's within standards for this lappy.

How do you control the fans with NHC?
    Is it under ACPI?
It says "ACPI Control System is not yet configured for this system"
What do you have to do for it to work?

0.0 Really? Which power profile did you use?

I thought that power4gear does help in powersaving....anyway, will NHC automatically switch profiles like power4gear?

There was a post a while back about fans for the a8jh or something. I downloaded the files and switched the stuff to be a8j generic. Works great. Fans off at 45*, on at 55*, medium at 60*, max at.... I can't remember. The medium setting really blows out the heat.

And yes, NHC does dynamic switching. It even works with the Power4 settings if you want to keep that horrible software.
