Well I'm on week number two with my A8Jp and Wednesday night I plop down on the couch and fire it up. The screen is all screwed up! Hmm restart (first rule is always restart) and I notice the boot screen is messed up as well. Get into windows open an IE window and it fixes itself. Figure that was odd, but I have seen happen it before on desktops with loose video cards or corrupt drivers so I let it go with the thought that I'd dig into it on the weekend. Well last night I fire it up again and I can't get it to uncorrupt, multiple reboots, tried to restore it back a few days, nothing. Even the boot screen and bios pages are corrupt. I tried it with the DVI out to a Dell 2001FP and it looked great, heck 1600X1200 looked extra great. Anyway so now I'm down to it is corrupt in the bios/boot screens, corrupt in windows, but the DVI out gives a great image. So the laptop screen is bad right? I'm just looking for some input from Asus owners before I RMA to newegg (I think I still can as I am inside 30 days). Here are a couple pics of the bad screen and then one with the laptop LCD vs dell LCD image.

Just a note: While you can return defective notebooks to Newegg within 30 days for replacment (Newegg is pretty good that way - it's not even their problem!) they do not have any A8Jps in stock right now. You may want to call and ask how that might affect your timeline for getting a replacement.

Since you have the Asus warranty, you can always get it fixed through them if it will take Newegg a while to get you one.

hmm, this is very interesting, since you've tried multiple reboots which is what I was initially going to suggest.

How about, different powermodes in P4G, or if you have overclocked the GPU, that may be the issue too, so set the GPU back to normal using your External Monitor.

Other than that, I would suggest returning it on the basis of a seemingly defective screen. It could be that the connector got loose somehow. But it may be just best to return it, or at the very least call ASUS possibly talk to them?

Wow! That's unusual. I've never seen screens like that (except in momentary flickers on other PCs). Couple of thoughts:

    1. Did you install any updated (like monitor, Catalyst, other video) drivers? If so, maybe reinstalling the old drivers from the driver CD will fix it.
    2. Did you install/update anything the day before things went bad?
    3. Do you have this problem if you boot into Safe mode?

Since both the boot up and BIOS screen have this problem, I'm guessing it's a monitor issue, since the video drivers shouldn't load up at BIOS level.

Yes I noticed the no stock condition, maybe they can refund me until they are in stock. Newegg has always done good by me so I'm not too worried there.

I installed the ATI drivers from the ASUS site, they were dated newer than what was installed, but when I did I lost some ATI powerplay functionality (think that is what it is) functionality so I went back to the original on the CD. That was last week though and no problems since. No software updates of changes recently. Tried safe mode and got nothing different.

    Milestone

I removed P4G early on. Nice software, I just was plenty happy with the normal power tools and the ATI built in video power tools. I think it is great that Asus includes such software, but I've always been a bit of a minimalist on my configs. That went, the network utility went (I'm always wireless), the multi display thing went (not used with desktop display) the wireless config thing went (I like the intel tool actually) etc .. I kept splendid and something else but forget what.

I'm thinking it is a loose connection to the LCD connector; can the video compartment be opened without breaking any seals? I just want to check that everything is seated before I go through the hassle of returning the thing? And I'll probably give Asus that call as well.

Definitely sounds hardware related... especially since you see the same thing in the BIOS.
It should undoubtedly be covered by warranty... both through NewEgg and Asus. Pick and choose :)

Well I went Asus, after 10 minutes on hold at newegg and the asus tech picking up after less than a minute. Also I found Asus will pay for shipping as I am inside 30 days since purchase. I expect an email Monday with RMA details. He also mentoned that I can request a replacemnet vs getting this machine repaired as I am insde 30 days, I'll need to get more detail on that.

Anyway If I ever find out why the screen went bad I'll update the thread with details, Thanks all...

Also just a note on the Asus tech, it was refreshing to be able to start a conversation by telling someone the details and what you had done to isolate the issue and have them understand that you are not clueless so they just skip the whole " please reboot your system and lets see if it goes away" garbage. Even though it sucks the thing died 2 weeks after I got it, at least I did not spend and hour on the phone with Dell like tech support.

Yeah sorry, your LCD or the connection to it is faulty. I'd return the whole unit and get a brand new one, not a repair.
