What happened is, the battery percentage was about to fall to 6%. Normally i will start charging (because at 5% the notebook will initiate hibernation). But today, when i checked the battery level it says 7%, then a second later it initiates hibernation. before it goes fully into hibernation, the battery dies. Obviously i should have 6% battery i think. so i tried booting using battery power but failed. Booting of AC power, and back into Windows XP, the battery indicator tells me it is 1%. what on earth? And to think i did a battery calibration utility 2 weeks ago......

    Help

what were you doing when this happened? if you suddenly do something that is power intensive, it will quickly drain your battery and the reporting in actual battery life may lag a little....

Try to recalibrate it since something tragic may have happened after or during the last calibration. Also it may be that your battery is asking you to bury it just like duracell, laptop batteries must die too, eventually. If you've had your battery more than a year + or you recharge everyday it might be time for a new one. Have you noticed that when you fully charge it that it doesn't last as it did a few months ago or years ago? Also check the battery setting in windows and see if it has changed somehow to make your laptop shutdown at a higher %. THE 2 POSTs before this one may also be relevant to you. GOOD LUCK let me know anyhow.

It was idling while i waited for the 6% mark. No intensive gaming/ no antivirus scanning. Nothing. Not even browsing.

Nothing went wrong though..and this laptop has been with me for only 4 months. And it happened twice in 2 weeks recently.

I don't think there's anything wrong here, your critical alarm states it will go into hibernate at 5% charge. You can use NHC or any other program which displays your discharge rate.

As soon as your charge level is 10% and under, you discharge rate increases even if your doing the same thing.

For example an Idle laptop at 100% charge will have a discharge rate of 23 watts, but once the battery dips to 10% charge or less, your discharge rate could be as high as 31 watts.

So the last 10% of charge will be drained a lot faster than the other 90% charge.

I hope this helps explain what may be going on.

Why does the discharge rate increase? what is the laptop doing extra that makes the power requirment jump 30%? Hibernation will draw extra power due to harddisk activety but why before that?
