I plan to do some DVD conversions to Xvid for bringing with me on travel on the A8Js. I don't need or want the entire disc image on my hard drive and I think Xvid is a great and mature codec now for my needs.

I know the A8Js has a very good processor for a laptop, but since it's very CPU intensive, is DVD to Xvid conversions a good idea on a laptop? Or will it get very hot after each rip is done? Should I be expecting to see the fans kick into high mode and then get worried since these conversions over an hour? What if I bought a Vantec Lapcool 3, would I be okay?

    Thanks.

In my opinion, if you don't put your laptop on your lap while you rip dvds, it won't be a problem. If you put your laptop on a table, use something to put under your laptop and lift the back side of your laptop to make some more space for air travel through.

Fans kicked to max is normal because the CPU is on high loads. I have a E1705 and use it for convert HDTV shows 1080i resolution to DVD for more than 1 hour without a problem. Core Duo processors are build to edit videos, pictures so you don't have to worry if you force your CPU to work too much.

It gets hot yes, the fans will be on, maybe at max. When I do similar encoding(h264->XviD for example), it gets a bit toasty but the fans themselves do a good job in cooling, though a cooler will come in Handy. I also have the LapCool 3, and it does a good job with its dual fans. Just make sure the vents are clean and ther eis enough ventilation for the notebook, and the heat will be still there but it won't hurt the notebook much.

    Thanks for the replies.
Just so I know, is the Lapcool 3 good for use on non-solid surfaces as well, like a bed's mattress, or a sofa, or my lap?

In my opinion, A8Js don't need an extra cooler. This is a very cool laptop :)

A video conversion shouldn't really be a problem at all. You know, people play games with this computer and when you are gaming, also the graphics card gives a lot more heat out. And it's definately the Geforce go 7700 which is warmer than the processor.

Yes, you will hear the fan making a bit more noice when you do video conversion, but it's all normal. Of course if you really want to buy a laptop cooler, go ahead, but this laptop don't need extra cooling in my opinion.

I just did the intel thermal test and it claims it wont go above 74c

Thats about 16 c below what youd have to think about getting a cooler for.

The machine can be on for 12 hours decoding videos with no cooler I dont think it needs one.
