doneAlexandro, you find the english forum at http://www.p35-forum.de/board/board.php?boardid=73.

However, I searched the whole forum for A8H without success. :(

Sorry for hijcking this thread, we should make a new one. I'm not a programmer, but I am willing to spend some time to create files for NHC for my A8H.

Right now the fan is always on, and the core temperature is 31 degrees c. Seriously, this is not what I want. I'd prefer a core temp of 45-50 degrees and a silent notebook.

I think Asus should include fan control in bios, like my Shuttle XPC has.

Is it a doable project for a non-hacker to make fan control for A8H work in NHC? Do you think I could use files for other models and modify them without too much hassle?

I tried to use ACPI for A8J... I just renamed all parts of text "A8J" to "A8H". ACPI turns on but the fan couldn`t be controled. Sorry for my text stiyle and mistakes, I`m a russian :)
PS: you are lucky! My CPU temp is about 42 and about 48 with loading

I`ve found the solution! You need visit this site http://nhc.justred.info/ and download ACPI for A8JE/P.Then rename ALL A8 types to A8H and it will work!! But i think thet we need to correct the temperature parameters in this profile

    doneAlexandro,
I use a program called "Core Temp" to read my CPU temp. People say that the NHC temps are wrong. In NHC my CPU temp is 40 when browsing, writing etc. but this may not be correct...

So, you say that A8JE/P works with A8H? Wow, that is good news! Have you found any problems or errors with this method?

And what do you mean with the temperature parameters? Not so good?

Oh, I also want to know if you have A8He or just A8H...and what Bios. I don't know the difference between these two, but it might be important if we use different versions. The NHC file is for bios 208, but for the A8H, only bios 204 is available!!! :(

I have A8H, BIOS 204! http://stream.ifolder.ru/1155032 - this is corrected profile, but it steel in german, and you need to change temp of FAN on and OFF (for example 40 - ON, 35 - OFF). In German: FAN ACIK - FAN ON, FAN KAPALI - FAN OFF

Thank you very much for your help. I will try this ASAP, really nice of you to upload the file.

German you say? It looks like turkish to me... :)

So this means that you cannot set the fan to a low RPM, but only on/off? That's a shame, it would be so much better to leave it at like 1600 rpm all the time instead of this cycling thing.

Somethings that I believe we should be aware. The A8 models aren't not all the same, having different CPUs. In my case I have a A8Js with a T7200 and 2gb RAM. Some users might be reporting temperatures of T2xxx or T5xxxx CPUs (thus colder than mine), thus not making the comparison straightforward. When I read temperatures of 31º degrees, for me this is a blessing, as my CPU has temperatures of 42/44 on idle and 45/48º with some applications working (using NHC; with core temp, the temperatures are lower). Another thing that seems to be apperent, is that the BIOS version seems to have impact on the way the fan works. More recent BIOS seem to exhibit this problem, while older Bios seem not to (I've googled and found a review where someone detected the fan issue after upgrading the Bios). Btw, my Bios is v211.
    All the best,

Yep, Asus seems to be missing that one. I also prefer a higher core temp and a silent notebook. Thus anyone knows of an Asus email where we could send our concerns? I've also contacted Asus via the vip service and was told that they follow international standards and so on. But, if the Shuttle XPC and other Asus products have the possiblity for the users to control the fan settings, why don't they release the same type of software for notebooks. Plus, I have other notebooks from other brands and the core temperature is higher and the fan is not always working. A lower rpm at the lower fan setting might solve the problem.

Because my fan is very noise!

Indeed there is nothing amazing about reading fan speed RPM, this is an option in several Bios. For Shuttle, you can both select temperature thresholds and prefered RPM.

My fan is running at almost full speed, and when I put my hand next to the vent, I can only feel COLD air coming out... This is rather annoying.

Nickie, are you saying that using the files for another A8* in NHC could give you wrong temps? Scary...

Oh, by the way, the ACPI files are working on my A8H as well. But, of course, the temperature goes up and down in a loop. This would NOT be a problem if you could set the fan to be always on, but at a low speed. We need to make that possible! But how...

Nope. I'm saying that when reporting the temperatures we should also report the CPU of the model. When I read reported temperatures of 31º degrees, this may be due to differences in the CPU, thus I will not be able to get those temps. Given that the T2xxx and T5xxx CPUs are colder than the T7xxx, this may induce other users into error. Also, I've found that NHC and Core Temp report different temperatures. Nothing to worry.
I'm not using the NHC for the A8Js file, as I prefer to have the fan working than working in this cycle (I'm no expert, but I believe that the on/off of the fan cycle, with bursts of activity, may reduce its life). If there is a solution that allows reducing the rpm, than I'll use it.
BTW, I have a HP dv1267ea with a 1,7ghz CPU which reports core temps of about 56/60 when idle and the fan DOES NOT WORK at those temperatures, Only when the temps are higher that 60 something the fan starts to work, but only for a short period of time. I believe this is poor BIOS programming from Asus.

Same issue with my daughter's dv1710nr with Cel420 cpu, that fan doesn't come on until near 60C. However, I disagree that Asus has done some poor programming, because of the effect this has on the HP's underside by the time the fan *finally* comes on and then runs for only 30 sec, keeping the temp constantly in the high 50s after moderate use. The underside of the HP near the CPU bay is Powerbook hot and very uncomfortable to the touch, making it impossible to work on anything but a hard surface (and I am uncertain of the long term effect on PBarn desk's glaze paint at that rate, so it lives on a notebook cooler :() .

I prefer the temps of my Asus, keeping things in the 40s and cool to the touch, thanx :). The hottest thing about mine is the HDD, and that stays below 50 most of the time.

ClearSkies, I agree with you but I believe the noise shouldn't be as noisy as it is. If Asus reduced the fan speed at the low setting, the CPU would still be refrigerated but of course that would make the cpu hotter. It's a kind of trade-off: some more temp degrees, less noise. A constant temperature of around 50º is berable, imho.

If you have a brand new Intel Core CPU with a good dedicated graphics card, of course your computer will generate heat. But my laptop is a budget one, with integrated graphics and a plain Celeron M CPU. That is why I right now, with the fan running like hell, have a core temperature of 27 DEGREES CELSIUS!!! This is three degrees over my room temperature for god's sake! Now you understand why I find Asus' thermal policy really weird.

Please Asus, let my ears rest and create a bios with flexible RPM and more temperature zones!!! I know you can do it!

So what do we have now? Now we have a profile which can regulate the fan speed with a various temperature parameters. Thank participant of the russian forum Asus "NullPointer". He`s made it fully! you can download it from hi`s link http://stream.ifolder.ru/1208688
    It is fully workable!

I'll start a new thread right away actually.

doneAlexandro, the program I use for checking core temp is called "Core Temp Beta 0.94", I don't know how reliable it is for reading temperatures though.

I've just adapted the files to the A8Js (just changed A8H to A8JS) and it's running in my A8Js T7200 like a charm! The temperatures reported by NHC using a fan speed of 115 is of 46º in idle (just firefox, outlook and Kaspersky Internet security running). Core temp reports temperatures of 40 in one core and 43 in the other core. The noise reduced dramatically, I can hardly ear the fan working. Just great.

Congratulations. These temps could not possibly be bad for your hardware, so why live with the noise...

The ACPI lets you choose between auto temp and auto speed, but I dont get the auto temp to work properly, when selected my fan goes to max speed and slowly goes back down, but it takes too long to be convenient. So I just stick to the auto speed, with small adjustments to the profile steps 1-6.

Do you see any danger of using NHC with these settings as a permanent solution? Is NHC reliable if I for instance leave my computer on unattended for a long time?

I'm also using autospeed. I've never used NHC before, because my other laptops never had temp/fan probs (although the temperatures were higher), so I can't tell you for sure. However, I've noticed that, if you quit NHC the fan settings don't seem to return back to the normal/default settings. If by any chance NHC shuts down and you don't notice it (because you've left the computer unattended) this could mean that the temperatures can get pretty high. Of course that the best solution would be for Asus to release a new bios version or an application that allows to do the same as NHC, but it seems that it will not happen...

Don't know. I just tried it on my A8Js and it worked. You might try it with yours and see what happens. At most, you'll get high temperatures and then you just restart the computer so that the default settings kick in again. I advise you to use other temp monitor software so that you can double check the results. I also used Core Temp.

One thing that I believe Asus might take notice is that, with the settings I'm using I always have the fan working although at a lower speed (NHC 115, I don't know hoe it translates into rpm) and the system IS refrigerated even after going to almost 60º (I have NHC o increase fan speed to 130 after 55) and it drops to 45/46 afterwards with a NHC fan speed of 115 for core temps lower than 55 (ie, when temps reach less than 55 the NHC sets fan speed to 115 and it still cools down the CPU).

This is absolutely brilliant. Finally the laptop is silent! I've got a stable temp reading around 45 when the fan is set to 105 (can't hear it spinning in a room with no background noise). And if the lifespan of the laptop is shortened somehow I'll gladly take it, this is how the fan should have worked in the first place. Man, this made my day!

I don't know to what extent the lifespan is shortened... Just 4º/5º more, I don't thing makes a lot of difference given the CPUs were are talking about that are able to withstand higher temps. Also, there are reports of other systems with older CPUs that work on higher temps and that don' have any problems.Plus, given that the fan is now in a lower rpm setting, we must also consider the increase in its lifespan. But I'm no expert: if the system holds for the next 3/4years that's ok by me.

Is there an expert out there that can shed some light on this issue?

After one day working (word, excel, outlook, firefox, foobar, kis, SAS and Stata) with this file with 115 as the minimum fan speed, my CPU temp is stable at 47º with no problems with NHC. I've put the computer in hibernation and standby and had no problems. Wake-up Asus and deploy something similar!

How can you control the fanspeed? Got the ACPI controls and NHC.

EDIT: Nevermind, I managed to pile through the russian site :) This was great, thanks to the russian :D Can anyone with some programming skills implement those 2 ACPI cfgs together, so we can get the brightness option together with the fan speed control? Thanks in advance.

    Hi!

New updated ACPI script for A8H can be found here: http://forum.notebookreview.com/showthread.php?t=107203 (look for the lastest messages in topic).

Please change A8H to A8JS (and so on) and use updated script. It has been improved dramatically, including overheat prevention feature (BIOS automatically turns on hardware control in NHC if is down and temperature is too high).

PS: Please report any erros (and any other info) of the script to me (using private messages).
