I found a way to reduce the fan noise of the W8Js by 50%.
I found out that the fan noise is amplified by the way the air shoots through the ventilation grill. By taping a simple piece of tape on a certain spot on the outer exit ripples it is possible to disturb the air circulation within the exit shaft. This has an immediate impact on the noise generated by the fan and it takes out the annoying "humming" noise. There is no risk of overheating. I monitored the temperature over a 2 day period. The rise in temperature was only marginal (1-2C) operating heat varies between 45-50 instead of 43-50 with the modification.
Here is how you do it:
Take a simple piece of tape, transparent or not, does not matter. tape it on the exact same spot shown in the picture. Make sure the ripples are covered completely to the bottom so no air can pass. The air flow is redirected away from the sealed area.
Try it and give me some feedback on your experiences.

The a8Js is the quietest laptop I've ever owned -what are you doing that's causing so much fan noise?!
-
anyone tested it yet??
-
My fan is going at low speed right now I can feel it.
Ok my ear is right next to it. I can feel the air....
I CANT HEAR A THING!!!
I can only hear it when its going fast during a game and just oh so barely and Im usually listening to the game lol I listen for it just for noise people.
If you can hear the asus a8js, I mean not be annoyed by it but you can hear it at all you need a different sort of model because its basically the quietest model with a fan out there.
I mean there must be some defect possible in the fan or the way its set Im not hearing a hum and putting tape on it wouldnt make any difference theres just not enough air going through there lol.
Someone must have the fan going full speed all the time to even hear it at all.
I mean Im not trying to compare my hearing to yours or a dogs or whoever. Theres not enough air passing though the grill to produce a sound wave -
My fan is running all the time and you can definitely hear it all the way. I wonder what kind of A8js you got but i already tied 3 models and they all have the same noise. Whats you average temperature?
-
Well I can't say I'm comfortable with the idea of putting tape on the ventilation slots, but if it works for you go nuts.
-
As for the noise, you cant tell me that the fan does not make any noise, i have heard notebooks way quieter than this one. Or do i just have a defective unit? It seems like the A8js has 3 modes as for the strenghts of ventilation
-
quietest laptop ive ever used
a
including dell e1705, sony sz, dell e1505 sony pcg nvr toshiba libretto
the reason I cant hear it is because there isnt any sound coming out of it. none to reduce....
It must be you have different hardware than me obviously or a setting... -
you are saying that the fan is off? well, thats impossible
-
-
the orignal one 204
the fan is at the low rpm setting. Almost completely inaudible.
can only hear the fan when its going fast. -
-
Thats possible. I havent changed the bios because I cant be sure.
fan gui should be able to change that. -
-
i9kfangui
I dont recomend messing with it though lol -
All i know is that the A8js makes some serious noise, I have already exchanged 3 models and they all make the same goddamn noise. All i have gotten from switching models is a screen with even more light leakage and a badly aligned keyboard. i hate asus.

hello everybody,
ive had the same experience with the A8Js...the CPU is always on...running at 3200rpm.
when the laptop starts up, the CPU temp will be around 34degrees and will gradually get hotter...when it reaches 50 degrees, the CPU fan turns on at 3200rpm.
THis is when the problem that Exxi and Redrum are having...the CPU fan NEVER turns off!
the CPU will cool back down to 36-39degrees after 5 minutes or so, but the CPU fan will still be blowing at 3200rpm, which is quite noticable.
Ive been to the ASUS warranty centre, and they too found this quite weird...which is why they tried changing my CPU fan...which didn't do anything.
So i think i narrowed it down to the BIOS..or something to do with software..
i Upgraded my bios to 207 from 204 if anyone is wondering..but i do remember the fan doing the same thing when my bios was 204.
I was also at MilestonePC last night, and they dont know why the fan is always on...but in a big room with other sounds, the fan is pretty unnoticable.
I really dont have a solution for this, ive been trying lots of things, such as ACPI control with NHC.
I set the fan settings to turn off at 39degrees and On at 51. The problem with this, is that the CPU fan will turn off at 39 degrees, then just heat up to 51 and the fan goes on again. haha, so its a rinse and repeat cycle.
im beginning to learn to live with it, but i really wish i could hear some other A8Js's that users have. oh well, that's not really an option is it?
anyways,
good day -
I tested to go back to 204 from 207 but no difference there.
-
Yeah, same here, i wish i could compare some A8js with some users.
However, i did compare 3 already at the store where i bought mine. They all sound the same. I hope asus will release a bios update that will help reduce fan noise or even skew the treas hold. I did unplug the cpu fan once to see how long the computer can go under heavy usage. 80C and then it turns off. So it should be possible -
OK, then it's just something odd with a couple of laptops then. I'm serious when I say that my A8Js is VERY quiet -if I'm not gaming then the fan is barely running and even when I'm gaming it's not loud. Maybe the heat pipe in the heat sink is defective and it's just not wicking the heat away from the CPU, or there is something wrong with the way the heat sink is sitting against the CPU or GPU...
-
that is absolutely not how my machine goes
the cpu never gets hot enough to turn on the fan
the cpu temperature has actually never gone up on my machine no matter what i did lol.
Do you use like nhc or everest? What is showing you this temperature change?
My machine has two fan settings it seems. It only goes to the higher setting when Im running a game. And it turns off after the game is exited.
Only temperature that even goes up is the GPU, up to around 58 from 50.
I dont know what to tell you. Both of you bought your machine from europe sources? When you click on windows on drive C what is the created date?
What youre describing is nothing like my machine at all. -
hc allows you to set your fan setting time.
There is only one fan in the a8js. It is um... medium sized laptop fan
When you consider the e1705 has two large and two medium fans or like most notebooks have one large one medium fan this machine is nearly fan less
the fan is the same kind as used in all other notebooks, only as I said its smaller and fewer lol.
Im going to repeat this, if you hear your notebook more than any other notebook.... you have faulty hardware. I mean, you can hear or detect it ..... your ear can detect its functioning from typing distance.
If you returned 3 and they were all the same though, its something wrong with you.... so Im trying to get this at face value. Help what could be a problem. -
stamar,
could you list the software/bios and the versions you have on your machine?
Because it is just weird that from the discussion, your laptop seems to be a lot quieter than the rest of us. My CPU and GPU goes up to high 60s when gaming. -
bios 204
did you get your laptop in europe?
my gpu has never been to 60 even after playing prey for hours. -
there is a difference between Eu and US version ;(
-
I got mine from milestonePC, so I'm guessing it's a US version.
-
80c HEH my asus z70va gets up to 97C fan going full bore when gameing. Its crazy but nothing helps it.
-
I got mine at MilestonPC as well..
so im guessing its a US version too...
when my CPU fan turns on it wont shut off..
goes to 3200 RPM then will always stay there..even when the CPU temp goes down to 37 degrees
i dont know why ASUS would have such a significant hardware change in the US and EUR versiono of the A8Js...
how can the fan noise be THAT much different? (from wht im reading)
im just learning to live with the fan noise now
or ive used the ACPI configuration in NHC to turn off the fan around 39 degrees and back on aronud 50, so at least the fan will be off for a while during low intensive work
ive brought my laptop to MiletonePC and the ASUS warranty place..
the ASUs warranty replaced my CPU fan but nothign changed...even they didnt understand why the CPU fan was always on...
they just think its a BIOS issue where ASUS wanted it like that...due to the fact i have a C2D and the Geforce go7700..
who knows?
all i know is that my fan never turns off
ill gladly trade you laptops stamar if it doesnt bother you =P
haha -
Ok,
there are two fan speeds correct?
The only time mine turns on high is in 3dgames. When I exit it shuts off within about 3 seconds.
I cant explain a difference myself either but yours must still be too hot?
Not that the fan is loud when its on high mind you you couldnt hear it in a silent room or anything. You can hear it within typing distance if youre listening.
Im not updating my bios though it has me worried enough about it because I still dont understand. -
I suppose that you don't just feel the noice annoying. Are you sure that the fan ain't running always when in 2d mode? Try with your hand? The only noice that comes out of the comp is the hard disk noice (which should be clearly noticeable)? -
ok
there are three different speeds of the fan right?
off low and high
The only time my fan is on high is when im gaming.
most of the time it is on low. I cant hear it in a silent room. -
But I really think that your fan settings wouldn't change if you updated the bios. Some people just get annoyed of the noice and some people don't. But if nothing is broken, don't fix it. It could be that the fan settings are truly different with the older bios or some a8js computers have different fans.
Wasn't your a8js one of the 1st ones? Maybe they are a bit more quiet ones -
It is possible that i have a different fan.
I wouldnt think that makes sense maybe one of the dealers would have a better idea if asus sometimes uses different brands of fans.
