Im considering buying an A8Js, but reading reviews and threads, many people say the screen is bad, with lots of light leakage or worse.

Can anyone tell me, or have pictures from firsthand experience with this laptop?

Also does anyone know of a place which has them in stock in Vancouver, BC, Canada so i can see them for myself?

    thanks

In my opinion here's how I would break it down, about the A8js Screen.

    Pros of the Screen:
    Bright
    Good Contrast
    Good Colours
    Well Saturated

    Cons:
Limited Viewing Angles (you will have to sit right in front, not to much room to spare)
    Some Light Leakage
    AUO Screen

The way I see, it that there is not perfect laptop out there yet, the A8js has all the specs one could want, but a few things like the screen and build quality like the W3J are still desired. However you would have to factor in that the A8js as a result is cheaper and more affordable to all, making it a very popular notebook.

Yeah, I was scared into canceling my order for an A8Js from Newegg because of all the negative reports on the screen... at least from other customers who had purchased this notebook from Newegg.

What I'd like to know is which vendors are selling these models with the better CMO panel that some people are talking about. I'd still buy an A8Js if I could be a little less worried about being disappointed with the screen. The notebook has great specs for the price.

I have only heard of europeans getting cmo screens.

Ok go ahead and go to best buy and look at all the screens.

Look at the hp 6000, the toshiba a105 the sony sz, sony fe, acer 5672

The a8js screen looks so much better than all of those its ridiculous.

The veiwing angle is worse though. It is worse it needs you to be right in front.

light leakage is the same or better. Barely any light leakage on my screen , i mean it comes from the bottom whatever, all of those models I listed are the same.

so anyhow if you looked at all the laptops in a retail store, and you thought the average one looked ok, well youll be amazed. The a8js is way brighter with higher contrast.

On the other hand if all of them looked terrible to you and you wanted one of the lg monitors then it might not look so great.

Go look at the video of the A8Jm in the stickied Asus All Models Video & assembly guides, it shows a the angle views (horizontally and vertically) of the A8Jm, which should be pretty similiar to the A8Js.

Maybe what I posted might help (The A8Jp and A8Js should use the same AUO screens, I could be wrong). Click here

People are blowing this way out of proportion. Of course if you turn the brightness on an LCD screen ALL THE WAY UP and take photos of it IN THE DARK it is going to show some light leakage. Come on.

So it really isn't as bad as the people who are complaining make it sound?

Please understand that I have nowhere around here to go and actually see an A8Js, so all I have to go on is word of mouth. As such, I was a little worried at first.

I finally got my A8JS yesterday and I really love it. Best value I've found considering what you get!

I'm in Canada and got the AUO screen. Really, it's not bad at all. People are making it sound like it's not even useable, but the only time I notice light leakage is when background is completely black and even then it's nothing too distracting. It's nice and bright, text and colors are very sharp and I love the high resolution screen. I set my display setting to 120 dpi and now my text is perfectly readable.

Vertical viewing angle is probably the worst part but since it's a laptop it's no biggie... I don't plan on having 10 people over to watch a movie on my laptop! Also, the response time is pretty slow, I believe it's 25ms on this AUO LCD so I did get a bit of ghosting in games. But if I'm going to be gaming I'll probably connect this to an external LCD with the DVI port anyway.

    cheers

apart from the 1cm light leak at the bottom and the soft colouring, id say the screen is one of the best ive seen in any notebook.

actually the vertical view angle on the a8jm is much better than the a8js and a8jp.

auo uses the same number to describe the view ing angle, but this is a grey scale sort of thing and I can tell you older screen is actually better in that sense because i put them side by side.

I have purchased three notebooks/laptops in the last year and a half.

I have a Thinkpad my company bought me to run basic business stuff on, I purchased a Dell 9300 for my daughter for college and I just bought an Asus A8Js for my personal laptop and photoshop.

The Asus blows the others away for brightness, color saturation and contrast. I like the thinkpads construction but it is heavy and feels sorta old fashioned. The Dell was a great deal for a college kids first laptop and looks pretty nice.

The Thinkpad's screen is a bit better on the off angle viewing but there just is no comparison to the Asus for overall viewing pleasure.

I have a desktop for professional photo editing and an incredible Eizo LCD which is better than my laptop (at $2,000 it should be) but I really like my laptop screen.

If you buy an Asus A8Js for the value it is and not make it the perfect machine (none are perfect) you will be very happy. I would buy it all over again ...the Dell and IBM are nice too but the Asus is better.

Oh yes I looked at probably the same screen as you did on your 9300, I looked at the wxga screen on the e1705.

You dont even know what light leakage is. So much dimmer with lower contrast.

And the manufacturer of that screen is LG which is supposed to be top line. The a8js screen is so much better than any mainstream level notebook. Its amazing actually.

I am trying to keep from sounding like a fanboy. I don't have any particular loyalty to any brand. If it's good then that is all that matters.

The thing is, the Asus when seen straight on is so good I find myself not happy with any other viewing angle.

With other laptops the staight on view is good but the slight (maybe 15 = 20 degrees) off angle isnt that much different. With the Asus, the straight on is so good that off angles are destined to look worse.

And the brightness of the screen can take a bit of getting used to. If people are having any light leakage concerns it may be attributed to the incredible light output of the A8Js versus most other laptops brands.

Just to be fair ...the laptop isnt perfect :-D I would prefer a black textured finish that would be more durable against scratching ala the Thinkpad. I would like the dedicated buttons at the top to be programable to other functions. The DVD drive is a little noisier than the other laptops and of course the speakers are total crap! ( I use Sennheisers for music and movies etc..which sound AWESOME on this laptop)

Anyway, I have had the laptop for about a month or so and I love it.....

The user Exxi showed pictures of his a8js screen ok, and it was faulty.

It was screwed up and he returned it. I think it scared a lot of people because its the most recent picture an owner showed here of their screen

You could get a faulty screen. No different than any other machine....

Are the speakers on the A8JP better than the ones on the A8JS? Because I am hearing that the ones on the P are pretty solid, very decent, and a lot of people saying the ones on the A8JS are really poor.

    Anyone know?

the response time on the g1 is 16 ms.

I havent noticed ghosting on any games I have played including oblivian or um... prey. Or graw. Those are all fps type of games. Or dark messiah of might and magic.

However The game that you notice ghosting on is the rts type game not the fps.

My old sony screen would have ghosting on bfme 2.

The screen is particularly bad. Especially in FPS games where the background is dark (such as FEAR). The bottom of the screen bleeds through and due to the poor viewing angle, no matter how much you tilt the screen, nothing can fix it.
It is far worse than my previous two laptops. HP Pavillion 3000t and Compaq Presario 1500t. On a side note, the glossy screen doesn't help either if you sit in a room with overhanding lights. The glare gets annoying very quickly.

Other than the screen everything else in the A8js is great.
