I cant decide between them. ive heard the screen and battery life isnt very good on the a8js, but does anyone have the battery life for the core 2 duo
W3J.
I know itll come down to personal preference, so what are yours.
All three fit my needs and it is only between these three, so i just want to know which you think is the best for the money.
Oh and i live in canada so i will probably be buying from ncix.com or milestonepc.
thanks

I'm on the G1 bandwagon, it's awesome. What I don't get is how they're all different screen sizes and you still can't decide haha. I like the resolutions of the A8js (WXGA+) and the G1(WSXGA+) much better than WXGA.
-
G series much better i think! I'm getting 2 hours of battery life on my G2! The screen is awesome!!!
-
G1 also costs a lot more
-
If you upgrade the A8js to 2GB RAM and a 160GB HD I think it will actually cost more than a G1. And the W3j only has an x1400 or gf7400 doesn't it? I think it's worth the money.
-
Offtopic: btw, any tips how to find out the RPM on my hdd without taking it out and read the label on my g2?
-
So tempting for a G1... when do you guys think the price would drop off a bit?

The W3J has an X1600 256mb/512 hypermemory
The A8js is the best bang for the buck performance 14" laptop, so is the A8jp, but many would prefer the Go 7700 over the X1700, since it is slightly more powerfull.
The G1 is also the best bang for the buck 15.4" performance laptop, if you want a 15.4" with good specs, this is your laptop.
The battery life on the W3J is roughly 2.5 hours but it has a mutli-bay in which you can put a modular bay battery in there to get another 2 hours of battery life, your total becomes 4-4.5 hours.
The A8js roughly gets 2+ hours and the G1 also gets roughly 2+ hours of battery life.
If you want more battery life then you may want to consider the W3J.
However, you can just purchase another main battery for the A8js or G1 and then switch batteries when the first one is complete.
First thing you want to consider is what screen size you want, 14" vs 15.4", basicaly, portability vs desktop replacement, once you pick either, then you will pick the a8js or G1 respectively. -
I heard the g1 got 3-4 hours battery life...doing low power proceses of course
-
Go and G1 start with the same letter...so Go G1!
-
The problem is i have no preference regarding the screen size, so it is a difficult decision because all three are quite similar. I think im going to head over to ncix and check them all out personally.
Another Question, how does the warranty work from milestone.pc if you were to upgrade the laptop, also if you upgrade wouldnt that void the extended three year extra warranty if you were to get that aswell. -

That's definitely a good way to make a decision for a laptop, also reading many reviews also helps as more and more reviews are published all over the net.
Regarding warranty on Customized notebooks, we would give you a MilestonePC warranty, in which we will cover your laptop, instead of ASUS.
And Yes upgrading the laptop would void the extended warranty, fortunately there are loop holes to this. Some resellers shy away from this more than others. For example if you take the A8js and put an extra 1GB of ram, you've technically voided the warranty, but if your laptop is in need of servicing many would take out the piece of ram and ASUS wouldn't know. Same goes for the Hard Drive, many want bigger and faster hard drives, but also keep their orgininal hard drive that asus provides just in case they ever have to use the warranty.
Overall it really depends on what performance you want from your laptop, the A8js and G1P are very well specced laptops where many wouldn't need to upgrade it since the laptop itself is performing so well, whereas others want to upgrade to get the absolute best and maximum performance out of their laptop to date.
It's all depended on what you want. -

i think if you dont like the flashyness of the G1 then the W3J is the way to go.

If you find your self on the move alot. If you like well built , great looking, pleasant to the touch things then the w3j is definitely the way to go, if you need more battery life and more hdd space the w3j wins it hands down. if you are on a budget and dont care about nothing but gaming performance then the a8j or g1 is for you. Its as simple as that. w3j better looking, better quality, longer lasting vs better game performance in the others.
-
I was in the same boat with deciding between the A8Js, W3J and the G1p. It was a question of build quality vs performance/screen resolution for me to go with the G1p.
In the end I really wanted the larger screen and the higher res on the G1P. Additionally the Fn and Ctrl buttons were in their normal positions on the G1. Since I switch back and forth between desktops and laptops this was very important to me. -
I would go for the A8Js or A8Jp models. They offer the best performance for the money, especially the A8Jp.
-
I find that performance will outlast quality build. No use getting a super-duper quality built notebook that will last for many years when the GPUS/Processors will not...in term of gaming.
-
There is a difficult calculation you have to make.
You do not want to invest so much in the build that it will actually outlast the useful years of your computer.
Some people have 6 year old thinkpads and I am impressed by the chassis durability. But what is it really worth? It is no longer a useful computer
On the other hand if you have too crappy a computer it might break or have a defect right away.
You are purchasing technology time with your computer purchase. The durability of the hinges and the lcd lid is only trying to make sure you collect on it, that you have a useful tool for as long as you should.
So what am I trying to say? Its worth something but dont go overboard. -
good points made. Build quality is more of a luxury and in practical terms it makes more sense to get a powerful PC than one built like a brick.
If that were not the case, I'm sure you'd see more manufacturers building at the W/V standard instead of at the A8/G1 standard. -
In my opinion, the decision depends mostly on who you are.
If you're a gamer and you demand the best year after year than get the decent build quality.
But if you're simply a computer user who wants something that is stylish and plan on using it for 3+ years, then get the W3J.
Lastly, if I could make a suggestion for the gamer, since desktops are significantly cheaper than laptops for the same components, why not make a desktop when the VGA card in the laptop is inadequate? That way years from now you'll have a gaming pc and a well-built laptop that should last for a couple more years. Overall, I think that'd be more efficient, cheaper, and practical than tossing your old laptop when you deem it inadequate.
yes I'm biased. -
A8js for LIFE niggz
-
Notebook = Porability
Notebook = Gaming in lectures/travels/friend's houses/etc.
And who said anything about G1 has poor quality? It is considered above average. It is just that the W/V series are THE BEST in terms of materials that make the poor G1 suffer from relative deprivation. -
I'm going with the A8Js based on its looks, size, portability, and gaming power. I'm planning on adding 1 more GB of RAM later on. I love the looks of the G1, but since I'm using my lappy for school and work I want the professional look of the A8Js.
and I'm a gamer. -
Interesting theory, but I find myself defining my professionalism or whatever through my behaviors/actions not by what I own or what I wear.
And, why do you need to look professional in school anyway? I find myself at my school to be more independent and surrounded with a bunch of my own peers. The only times I ever get professional is through interviews or other important events that will not require me to bring my notebook. Sorry, I was just wondering; perhaps, you have entirely different scenarios/school.
Also, I dorm and live a nomadic life. I feel that getting a desktop would cost too much space and would not suit my nomadic life styles. That is why I prefer a notebook over a deskbook/desktop.
Sorry for going off topic, but I just want to add my three cents. -
I agree with you, DyingDuck - especially in the school domain the look of professionalism is not needed or even required. Things would change, obviously, if say, you had to give a powerpoint presentation in a boardroom filled with powersuited folks and you have your G1 smacked on the table with its flashy green lights.
In the school domain, it doesn't matter what the professor sees in you. You're still young, who cares.
Regarding the topic title between these 3 laptops, I personally see that one of the biggest differences is the obvious difference in size and on top of that, the purported build quality of the W series but even so, like Stamar mentioned - if you're a true gamer, your laptop will be dead in a few years.
EDIT: I'm probably asking to be flamed but personally, I'd stay away from ATI if you're a gamer as ATI sucks balls relative to nVidia in providing superior drivers (that actually work without problems...and there's only ONE nVidia driver. One driver to rule them all....) -
I guess I like the fact that the A8J looks like a "normal" laptop on the outside, but its a screamer on the inside. That suits my style. But don't get me wrong I still love the looks of the G1.
I could buy either the A8Js or the G1 and be happy with it I'm sure. -
Just like you, i decided to go with the A8Js for both its look and power. I will receive it sometimein Jan, i hope
-
I think the biggest different is the screen size between these two. Some people could care less about 1 inch different, but to the others, one inch would mean the world (hehe).
Anyway, I feel that if anyone ever judges someone else or treat someone else slightly different by the colors of their skins...I mean...the shapes/colors of their notebooks (excluding in business), it is not worth being/working with those people. Sorry, I have a strong sense of creating my own identity. -
All great stuff, thanks for the help.
-
Does the G1 do better with its battery performance as opposed to the A8Jp /A8js ?
Pound for pound, which one is more efficient with the battery ? -
the G1 will do better in battery than the A8Js, because the G1 features an 8 cell battery compared to a 6 cell in A8Js.
I bought the G1 'cause it has a slightly better build, looks flashy, has the direct messenger feature I like, nice screen w/ wide viewing angles, longer battery life, and bang for the buck. If you take the cost of A8Js, add an extra gig, an extra 60GB to the 100GB hard drive, and add a bigger battery, the cost will be over the $1800 price tag on the G1.
IMHO, Unless you really need 14" and the lighter weight, the G1 is the better deal. The G1 is 6.8 lb while the A8Js is under 6lb, keep that in mind.
But honestly, if you're a business person and you attend formal conference meetings often where everyone dresses nicely in suits and ties, you'll look like a complete idiot if you carried the G1. Then everyone's probably gonna spit coffee all over you. Imagine those green flashy LEDs lighting up during a conference powerpoint presentation. LOL
I'm a high school student so that won't be an issue. -
I would find those lights would makeme look extra unique. Haha.
-
I think their cost is similar. You can find the a8js for $100 off pretty easily but the g1 is mostly full price.
I think the biggest advantage of the a8js is its much smaller. My whole computer set up is in a small bag. And its still the most powerful computer of its size two months after I got it....
I mean I dont have to ask around about who has the most powerful laptop of this size in the world.... I DO! it feels good for as long as it lasts.
The g1 has that same distinction sort of, but its not as impressive.
The biggest thing I like about the g1 is it has a nicer screen. Id like to see it in person to be sure because I think my screen is great looking. But its viewing angles are bad you have to be in front of it.
The g1 is using a modern lcd technology that is going to be more widespread in lcds that improves viewing angles. Youll spend most of your time on your computer looking at the screen, thats pretty much the most important thing. I love more resolution its great. Id get 1680 x 1050 on this screen if i could. Id put wuxga on a 13.3 inch screen, i think the more the better. I dont even know where id draw the line but not anything Ive seen.
So really its size vs screen to me. I dont really care about the eye and the lights on the g1 pro or minus. The better camera is nice too though.
Oh btw there hasnt been a a8jp owner describe its battery life. It might be better than the a8js. The a8js has sort of the median battery life of all machines being made 2.5 hours on medium, enough to watch a movie. The g1 should be about 3 hours or 2 3/4 at least. -
Someone should post some pictures of the three laptops next to each other to get a size comparison. I haven't seen any of these in person so I'm still having a hard time comparing the W3J's size to the G!. Both very nice and hard to decide on which one is better.
-
Man,
im having a similar problem too.
A8J vs W3J....
Ive heard many problems with the viewin angles for A8J. Screen is a biggie for me...but I would also like a camera.
I perfer 14 in screens....
I dont need a 15.4 inch -
MilestonePC.com Company Representative
Since 15.4" is something you don't need zmeflyby, you may want to consider the Compal HGL30. It is a 14" notebook with a Go 7600.
But you may also want to reconsider the A8js and W3J and the viewing angles, have a look at them in person or find a friend who may have either one and look at it and decide. But yes both screens don't have wide viewing angles when compared to the V1JP or G1.
However, if your going to be using an external monitor that could also make you reconsider both W3J and A8js.
Hope this helps clarify some information for you. -
I think i am going to buy the W3j and upgrade the processor from the T5500 to T7200. I think the quality outweighs the video card, cause i dont play that many games.
