    Hey guys,

I don't know what happened but my A8Js suddenly shutoff and refuse to boot back into windows or even the bios. Anyone have any suggestions on why it keeps shutting off? Initially, I thought it overheated, but now I am worried that it maybe a hardware issue. But, I will let the comp cool down for awhile.

    Thanks

I would first expect it's and overheating issue. Check your fan and radiator and see if it's clogged with dust/lint. Use a can of compressed air to clean them out if present.

Nope, I don't think it is a cooling issue. I just tried it, it just won't boot. Maybe the capacitors are blown.

Does the power LED come on when you hit the power button? Any sounds?

Is there a BIOS reset hole on the A8Js? Try poking it for 10+ seconds.

It could be a sensor going bad or your RAM or any number of things. You might try taking the ram and putting it back in (reseating it).

Reset the BIOS as Allurgroceries mentioned. Also try turning on your notebook with different power settings (on battery only, on AC adapter only, with both battery and AC adapter plugged in).

I don't think there is a reset button, unless someone can give me a rough area to look for it. The power setting doesn't matter. I am currently checking the hardware.

Some Asus notebooks don't have the BIOS reset button, but if there is, it should be located underneath the notebook. It's a small pin-sized hole which you'll have to use a paperclip to acess.

You can also try some others steps besides those mentioned above, which you will in my Tips and Tricks thread, under the "notebook won't POST" item.

Have you accidentally spilled any liquids on your notebook?

If your notebook doesn't even turn on after trying all the above options, it's probably a dead motherboard.

nope, nothing has been spilled on it.

All it does it, it turns on for 2 secs then it shuts off. I will just look for a replacement, if not a laptop, for sure a desktop.

    Probably a dead motherboard...
Sorry for your computer. Hopefully you'll find a worthy replacement (assuming it's no longer under warranty). :)

lol too bad it wasn't under warranty lol, off by 2 years :p or so. It kinda sucks, I hoped it would boot, but all it does is a cold shutdown after 2-3 seconds after powering up.

Don't know whether I should look for a new laptop or get a micro atx desktop (and netbook). But, I'll find something worthy!

Desktop+netbook certainly makes sense if your mobile computing needs are not too demanding. There are some nice EEE models out there. :)

Hey mythless! It's too bad it's dead. You chopping it up and selling parts? Your top in good shape?

My A8Js's top LCD cover is cracked since those yahoos at Asus overtightened the screws when they fixed the same problem last year. Now it's out of warranty.
