Recieved my Asus A8JP replacemnt from newegg yesterday because my old sager 8790 died a horrible death last friday.
so far everything seems good and fast, but i do have one concern.
everytime i look at a white background or any other solid background the screen seems kinda grainy. it seems as if theres some kind of grey texture laid over the screen and it makes the whites look.. well.. grey.
is this similiar to the problem that other asus owners have had with the x1600? i tried to upgrade drivers but lo and behold- ati dosent support it. whats up with this? i even upgraded my bios to the latest 208 (is that the latest?) and its still not looking very good.
lemmie know what you guys think of this, anyone else out there experiance this 'grainyness' with their A8JP?

Well mine was fine as far as I could tell. The incorrect replacement panel they put in when the first panel died (a 1280X800 replacement) was grainy though (goes back tomorrow) . Almost blurry really. I thought that was due to the lower res though.
I upgraded to 208 as well and it looked fine before the screen died.
I'm sure you have, but have you increased the brightness at all. It would help with the grey part, not so much the grainy part ... but just a thought *shrug* -
thats it? just one response? surely someone else has noticed a difference between this screen and the screens of other laptops.
my old sager 8790 had a NICE crisp screen that was WHITE. this one has stuff all over it and it seems more grey than white.
if its just me i might give asus a call and see whats up with the LCD -

Check the screen in safe mode, if the texture goes away then the problem should be fixable with a bios update like they did with the W3J.
If it still occurs then the problem is with the lcd backlight. The backlight is either using a weak CCFL or there is a coating on the diffuser assembly that is supposed to increase illumination, but has the side effect of making the backlight grainy...
You can always try and get a replacement set up, however there is a high chance that if you have to mail in for warranty service they will simply return the machine back to you without replacing the screen. -
I recieved my last night and the screen is perfect from the small amount of time I spent with it...in fact i like it more than i like the one on my Z70VA.
I will be spending a lot more time with it today reformating and all Ill post more info later. -

I have this same problem on my a8jp and the latest BIOS does not fix it. It's very disappointing.

Do you guys have an AUO lcd?
-
My question was going to be what LCD manufacturer you have? I have the same grainy problem now on my HP with a SEC display, but didn't have it with my previous AUO display. It's like the brightview/color shine layer is greasy or something.

The OP's problem sounds like sparkliness not graininess (which is pixelization on certain mostly darker colors).
The problem is that it seems that only a small percentage of people can see the sparkliness. Most people aren't bothered at all by it for some reason. To me it's so glaring I returned two computers because of it.
See my thread, especially my last post on page 4, where I discuss it.

I can tell you that the G1/V1/Z96J are computers that have no sparkliness if you want to be sure to get a computer without it. -
The display is CMO.
-
yes, CMO here as well

To anyone else who has this issue: contact Asus. When I let them know, they mentioned this was the first they had heard of the issue.

I too have an A8Js with CMO screen that appears grainy. Has anyone heard anything about a fix from ASUS?
