Hello, i recently recieved my W7J and i've been tryin to "speed it up" on boot and programs, etc etc.

I was trying to cut down on startup programs in MSCONFIG, and trim down some services under Administrative Tools in the control panel. I've done away with a few, but i still have 57 processes o_O.

I built my desktop, so i didnt have many processes at all...

I obviously didnt build my W7J, so i'm not sure what i can and cannot remove safely.

just wondering if some of these can be removed safely (has anyone toyed with it yet) or if i should leave them all 'till i get better aquainted with the laptop?

I did google searches for all the programs listed in MSConfig, but apparently, they are all important? o_O

(except for RTHDCPL.exe and ALCMTR.exe.... both of which i cant seem to find much information on. =/)

follow this at your own discretion.

drop down menu at the bottom will lead to more tweaks.

Don't use msconfig... Instead, go to Start>Run>type "services.msc"
Here, you can check out all the processes and to set them to Auto, Manual, or Disabled.

Here's a site with Black Viper's list (excellent resource for this type of tweaking)... it gives you a guide to all those processes running, so you can determine yourself if you'll be needing them:

How long does it take 2 boot? MSCONFIG is a good start... Also be sure to defrag and run disk clean up now and then... Check for spyware and Adaware once a week. And if you are running norton antivirus uninstall that and install Avast! lol

Concerned about 57. I was mad because my other Windows install had close to 80 processes on start up. I was hoping to get to 55. Now I am running around 60. What kind of performance boost are you trying to get?

Just now while browsng and on msn, i have 25 proceses taking up ~200MB of RAM.

Best thing to do IMO is to reformat and install only what you need. Since you built your desktop this shouldnt really be a problem for you.

Ctrl-Alt-Del, Task Manager, then Performance tab. System memory use is right side under the cpu trace boxes (Physical memory).
