Is ASMobile the new brand name for the Built Ons? To differentiate the lines?
Kind of like how ASRock is low-end Asus motherboards? -
I there a more populated battery (more than 6 cell battery) available for now?
-
Justin@XoticPC Company Representative
ASMobile is the new name over the old "Built on Asus"
At this time i don't have any info any other battery sizes. -
Are there any pictures available of the Z84J yet?

This is complete garbage. If you match the specs fo the g2 they cost the same fully configured give or take a few $$. the low end vga card and the bulky design and hi price..... Yet again asus shows a willingness to kill their barebone line. I dont know who is the target audience for this. This will not sell if you ask me. Give it a month and asus will either start rebating it or kill it by the end of the first quarter. Very very disapointing.
-
Asus is really backing themselves into the wall with the 'line differentiation'. If they put a Go 7700 into the Z84, it's faster then the G2, obviously they wouldn't want that... If they put in an x1700 it's the same speed for the same price...
So they go with the out of date Go 7600...
I don't know what they are thinking. -
Geared2play.com Company Representative
They are thinking that they can spin off their ensemble line while experimenting with their barebone line. The extremely poor sales they have been experiencing with barebones is a direct result of them not refreshing the barebones. It is a mistake that will take them a long time to recover from hopefully
-
put the screen of this on the G2 and then the G2 would be near perfect, infact the screen resolution of the G2 is the only thing preventing me from deciding on that laptop.
i find the G1 with a size od 15.4 isnt big enough -

In the US any 17 inch computer has to deal with the 800 pound gorrilla of the dell e1705
abroad the same model is not as cheap its more in the 2000$ range. So us consumers look at these things and wonder why but they work overseas. -
Both this and the G2P are potential killers that are badly let down by the graphics card.
The G2P really should have had a Go7900; currently, it is beaten in performance by the G1P and the A8Js, both of which are smaller and cheaper.
This should have had a Go7700, a number pad, and some other multimedia features to go with the (on paper) killer sound system, like an integrated TV tuner or something.
You really can't beat the E1705 in performance for value, but its achilles heel is quality. -
seems to also be the same chassis as the g2, minus the lights and the aluminum...

Exercising the same flawed thinking we see in many of their configurations, ASUS took the TV Tuner out of this model as it went from the Z83V to the Z84JP.
If they would have left the TV Tuner in it would have at least been a decent multi-media machine. However with the 7600 video card it isn't a 17" gaming machine in today's world, and without the TV Tuner it isn't a multi-media machine, and without the numeric keypad...well, you get the idea.
The MSI 17" (PowerPro I 12:5) has the same video card, but HAS both the TV Tuner and the numeric keypad at an honest weight of 7.65 pounds (measured on our calibrated digital scale).
I agree...what were they thinking? -
A direct comparison with a similarly configured HP dv9000t right now favors the Z85Jp if its price can hover around the $1500 US price range. However, the option for a tuner card on the HP makes it undeniably more attractive as an option for a media center machine. Perhaps the Asus quality and brand name will help attract customers looking for an alternative to the big name OEM's. But I do agree that either an upgrade to the X1700 or 7700 Go, or the addition of a tuner would have better helped you guys sell this particular model. Do you guys, as Asus resellers, have some type of obligation to take a certain number of these into inventory? If so, good luck!

Freedom and independence are glorious...we have absolutely no obligation to any ODM or OEM to take anything we don't want.

Asus R&D is in Taiwan, NA is just a sales office, and Asus ensemble is for whole world, barebones are barely seen in other part of the world except NA, at least from more than a year ago to now, Asus didn't take care of NA barebone market enough, maybe because Asus focused on ensemble too much, see how many new stuff in the past year on ensemble side. For Asus, to make the whole world happy is more important than to make NA happy. The other day, when I met the previous Asus GM in China ( now works in Asus NA ), I was so surprised when he told me how many Asus notebooks are sold there, NA is still a small market for them now.

It may be a small market but they only have them selves to blame. Poor marketing, product development and abandoning the barebone side of their biz....they will not go anywhere until they start producing better barebones. Barebones is how they made their name in the us. They can NOT compete with other brands for prebuilt models. They just dont get it. If they took every single ensemble they have now and made barebones their volume would grow. even without integrating their own components. I think they are understaffed. They should take some of their more knowledgeble dealers and hire us to work for their marketing/purchasing dept.

I have found some interesting infos, on this site.
Notably this line: "Designed for graphic MXM card, supporting NVIDIA® GeForce® Go 7300 256MB / GeForce® Go 7600 512MB / GeForce® Go 7700 512MB VRAM for readily upgradeability"
That's rather funny, to see that the MXM (MXM III Graphic Card Type btw) is still implemented on new models!
I am still curious to see if it will well work... -
usapatriot Notebook Nobel Laureate
We still need an Asus 17" with a 7950GTX inside.
-
Nice specs but quite heavy. Hate the name change though
-
Theoritically as it's a type III MXM (I just hope this info is true), this notebook should be able to carry the most powerfull graphic cards.
Just take a look on this page. -
I hope it uses MXM card.
Does anybody know will it released with Geforce 7700?? -
Yes, it does use an MXM card, the same type that the A8Js uses. I will contact ASUS to see if a 7700 512MB can be purchased separately. However, it's not even worth the upgrade. The real world difference between a 7600 512MB and a 7700 512MB isn't even noticeable. Unless you're just going to run benchmarks all day so you can see the 200-300 point increase in 3DMark, it's not even worth considering.
The main things to consider if you are comparing the Z84Jp and G2 notebooks are:
Z84Jp - WSXGA+ 1680x1050.
G2 - WXGA+ 1440x900
Z84Jp - HDMI Port
G2 - DVD-D Port
Z84Jp - 2.0MP Camera
G2 - 1.3MP Camera
Z84Jp - ExpressCard Slot
G2 - No ExpressCard Slot -
so the only asmobile models are the s/z96j the z84jp and the z62j which cant even take merom cpus?
-
ASUS will not provide support on this unit. It must go back to Intel. -
You know ice tea put up a picture of the a8jm vid card next to a mxm card
http://www.mxm-upgrade.com/notMXM.html
just so you can get a point of reference. Its very close to the mxm cards but different. lol. I mean its obvious they made a billion mxm type 2 cards and then just turned them over...
so technically you could turn them upside down and put them in a mxm type 2 machine. but, thats his next project and i havent seen an update in a while.
g1 a8j g2 are probably all compatible. -
Nice. Well, the only thing that really matters is if the cards will be interchangeable between the various ASUS units, which it looks like they are. Not really worth the upgrade, but it would be interesting to see.
-
um
no one has a picture of the cards from the g1 for some reason. Its hard to believe they are all that lazy.... -
I'll probably have a G1 sometime this week. I already have an A8JS and a Z84Jp. I'll let you know.
-
If the 8600 comes out in this format it will be worth the upgrade.
-
Yeah.. Ice Tea is selling the 7900GS.. but it's "bloody expensive". I like this thing alot over the G2.
