I have spent many hours researching what brand to aim for in laptop. Someone recently challenged me on my thoughts about ASUS. For those who have them please tell me if I am right or off track.
My thoughts were that ASUS is well known both for quality and as more an "Enthusiast" machine as opposed to more mainstream, household names found in all the "big stores". Well, someone told me lately that they thought Asus was a cheaper, get the most for the money type product. I think they may have been confusing Acer with Asus.

OK. Question is: Am I right? For all you in the Asus world would you say Asus is one of the better built brands?

Well its just a brand, for there products they offer a wide varity from the $3000 super enthusiast gamer notebook to the $300 EEE

In generael there build quality is supposed to be one of the better and they have probably the markets leading warrenty. However some products still have faults like any other so do not buy on name alone, research the product itself to see if its what you need.

Its definitely leaps and bounds above Acer tho :p

One thing tho that ties into what you said, you do get a lot for your money. The new M50 & G50 series notebooks give you more for your money than any other competing product that I can think of, but that doesnt make them any less of a performance or enthusiast product it just means they steped up a notch in what a stock laptop can come with for a good price.

In fact, there is a belief in this forum, certainly among some members (myself included) that ASUS quality is not really the same as it was a couple of years ago, and that it may be due to their recent focus on "bang for the buck" systems, rather than focusing mainly on high-quality systems.

I don't know for a fact that this is true, though, it's just a belief. And actually some of their new machines are doing pretty well (F8, M50) not just from a performance, but also from a reliability point of view -- to some extent; the M50 is too new to really talk about "reliability" with good confidence. Though, some of the new machines have their problems and quirks (what machine doesn't...)

If you want more details on this ASUS quality business, maybe you should check my survey which is linked from the Info Booth (something along the lines "A Survey on the ASUS Problems with Notebooks and Support"); and possibly the links therein.
