So it looks like the Nvidia 7700 Go on my A8JS went out. I'm happy with the laptop, and don't want to upgrade for a while, waiting on WM7 to get out and stable before I get back in the PC market. I'm trying to find a replacement 7700 chip, which is near impossible, especially the 512MB dedicated variant mine shipped with.

I'm also trying to get the MXM specs for this notebook to see if i could swap it out for a DX10 capable GPU, maybe something in the 8400 / 8600 series. What I've read so far points to MXM-II, but I'm not 100% sure.

Any and all info would be appreciated, havne't found much searching / owner's lounging yet.

Your best bet is to call the Asus estore (510-739-3777) and ask them to place a order for your GPU part. They're currently out of stock, but you can tell them the part number you're looking for (can be found HERE) and they'll help you locate the part.

Did that earlier today, also asked if they had a reccomended replacement / upgrade module (not likely, but we'll see). Thanks for the input.

If only someone had a beat up A8JS for sale...

I ordered a Asus F8SN gf9500 with 512MB from asusparts.eu. I'll let you know if it works. The chassis is exactly the same as A8JS' .
The MXM is not MXM but a mirror image of MXM.

the x1700 in my a8jp has been running like a CHAMP for 2.5 years now

its been on full load at least 10+ hours a day since day 1, with only a 3 month break in between

i'm amazed its still running strong

Try Btotech, looks like they still sell the 7700. Good luck ;)

Considering the cost (minimum $200) of the few 7700's I've found, I'm going to wait and see if this 9500 is compatible. Mirrored chips are certainly hard to find, wonder why Asus went that route. At least if I do pick up a 9500 series I'll have a DX 10 card, going to try out the Win7 Beta after my system comes back online.

I'm 99% sure that the 9500M GS will not be compatible on the A8Js.

Yeah, would be just my luck. Short of somebody having a beat up A8JS for sale, I might be boned. Really don't feel like shelling out 25% of what the laptop cost me in a repair bill. Might be time to go shopping. Wonder what ASUS has that supports multiple hard disks...

Forever - any luck on that 9500 yet?

If that's not an option, it's gonna be netbook time. I've given up on gaming for the moment, and the one game I still play has laughable GFX requirements.

Found another flipped MXM card I think. Can't make out any model numbers.

Still waiting for the card from asusparts.eu.
The design is exactly the same, they are both asus. Someone in other forum said that the chipset will recognize it, lets see.

Will be interesting to see. By dumb luck, I got the last 7700 chip the Asus E-Store had in luck, they literally created a new part # for me to order. David, +1 for you good sir.

Still curious to see if it works. I may relegate the laptop to my home entertainment center as my pocket pc is filling in pretty good for the time being. At least I can put off an upgrade.

It doesn't. When BIOS loads(little asus sound) pc speaker beeps like if there's no card. But the card fits perfectly.
