Anyone know how good the macbook pro is?
I already settled for A8Js over W3J, but now i wonder how macbook pros are

here's what i look for in a notebook: core 2 duo (min. T7200), widescreen glossy display, lighter than 6.2 lb, dvi port, strong build, graphics atleast X1600 256mb, SATA interface, dvd burner

MBP is better than A8Js in terms of build quality, but its X1600 is underclocked (i can prob oc it w/ ATiTool). The A8Js is cheaper and its graphics card is a lot better, but the build quality is where it lacks.

Anyone have any suggestions? How's the screen quality on the MBP, 'cause A8Js has 220 nits and has a nice display, but w/ lower viewing angles.

    thx.

(Btw, the MBP im looking at is the 15.4" w/ 2.33ghz core 2 duo and X1600 w/ 256mb)

I would prefer the less expensive a8js. Its smaller and, hey, did I already mention asus is so much cheaper! About 1000$ more for a MBP is a bit too much don't you think?

But anyhow, do what you think suits you best. If it isn't about the money, go with the option that you feel better :)

MBP's have very nice screens with excellent viewing angles. However, the A8Js seems like the more attractive choice for your needs.

yeah. a 2.33 GHz Core 2 Duo won't do me any better than a 2.0 ghz 2 duo, provided i'm more of a gamer. the graphics is probably where it all boils down to.

I guess i'll havta stay with the plastic build on the A8Js. $1800 vs $2800 is too big of a difference, and I also need room to upgrade. Hope someone comes up with a way for tightening hinges on the A8Js if I ever get that problem.

thx all. and i realli hope that the A8Js is sturdier than an E1505 from dell

Doesn't/Hasn't Asus manufactured for Apple anyway?

The hinge tightening procedure was posted on here a while back, and Eddie gave some input on the process. I think it's a non-issue for most people anyway - they are metal hinges.

Honestly, I'd expect better quality from the Asus then from the Apple....

just to correct your misconception: The latest Core2Duo versions of the MBP are no longer underclocked, but full X1600 spec. Probably they are now using X1700 GPU's and underclocking them to full X1600 spec ;)

If you are a gamer the A8JS is a better choice. But for all round laptop use, the MBP is a better machine. You pay for what you get,...

    OH really? it's a full spec X1600.
then i guess it wont matter much to me then. Anything that's X1600 or better is good enough for my use. I'll only be playing Oblivion, HL2, CSS, BF2142...

i guess i'll havta see whether I have a $2800 budget or a $1800 budget by the end of the yr.

    thx for that info.

If you look here, the lowend MBP has a 128mb GPU, but the 2 higher models have 256mb.
    http://store.apple.com/1-800-MY-APPLE/WebObjects/AppleStore?family=MacBookPro
Many are reporting that the GPU is not excessively underclocked, more like normal compared to other laptops with a X1600.
Also many are stating that the notebook is also much cooler than the previous generations, thus making it a viable alternative.

However the price to begin with it expensive, also the MBP is offering such high specs, thus driving the price exponentially higher.

Many will agree that the T7200 is the sweet spot in terms of price for performance, if you go any higher, your burning your money into a CPU that will only give small percentages increase in performance for a lot of money.

The A8JS has it's ups and down, just like all laptops, however in terms of build quality you will find this to be on par or slightly above par compared to most brands. Whereas the W3J would be considered to have excellent build quality.

THe MBP has a good design, good quality, and a good screen.

If you have the time to wait, before you really need to purchase, then do so. :D

    asus makes the macbook

the white one that is all plastic.

However I must say that the macbook has a nicer chassis than the a8js.

The macbook pro has the magnesium lid and a nice design. Its good. But what is that worth? Is it worth its weight in gold?
Its nice. I wish my a8js had metal to reinforce the lid it would keep it from felxing in the up and down closing motion and extend its life....

I mean Id pay for that stuff as a consumer but its a scam. If it costs 500$ to put 20c of aluminum in the lcd lid they get to keep that stuff.
I can literally bring my a8js to a machine shop and have the entire body made of aluminum for about 160$ and Im thinking about it.
