wow... its official, i'm holding out for the a8j. w3j is nice, but i'd like the nvidia card for linux.

(.. i think the mobility x1600 scores are messed up, most mobility x1600s i've seen score 3500-4200 range in 3dmark05. the go 7600 scores seem reasonable tho...)

dude that's for a 14" screen. that is pretty good resolution for a 14", most 14"ers are not even that. the macbooks have a 15" and use the same res.

I think WXGA+ on a 14" is perfect. More that that would make your eyes bleed. I think the US Version will come with a WXGA. Still **** Good.

I think the resolution is nice.. I'd like for people to point out a wsxga resolution on any 14" model. So far, I believe there are none. only sxga on standard ratio 14".

The first and fourth pages say the unit is WXGA (1280x800) but the last page lists it as WXGA+ (1440x900), which is it really? Only confirmed 14" widescreen with WXGA+ is the Dell D620.

Seems like it might get pretty warm on the rear right side, they packed the CPU, GPU and memory all in that area.

i think you guys are mistaken in that the A8Jm LCD is WXGA (1280x768) and not WXGA+ ...unless i missed something in that review..

i wouldnt mind WXGA+ however i have only seen WXGA on the review and websites.

I looked go 7800 gs on DELL E1705 or Inspiron 9400, their score seem to be lower than x1600. I was about to buy E1705 but seeing the score, I will wait for GO 7900. Hopefully they will be faster.

here's the link on go 7800 benchmark based on Inspiron 9400 1.83ghz NVIDIA 7800 go

i think it's because the go7800 is "ludicrously underclocked" but given the physical specifications compared with the mobility x1600 (such as 256bit vs 128bit memory interface) .. dell clocked their 7800 very conservatively, but i think the go7800 should be more powerful... in any case, i think the go7600 should more than meet my needs.

    :(

I hope when the barebone hits USA it would be avaliable in another colour :)o ) and hmm, cheap, 1200-1500 is good enough I guess.

what about W7?? Any built on asus version?

Yeah I have also tried to figure out which model is coming to the US and Canada, but almost nobody has a definite answer.

But if the arebone version is coming to the US than that;s the one I am most likely to buy! Need a laptop by october so I have loads of time.

well they put sxga on alot of 14in notebooks. But there are no widescreen sxga notebooks. But if you can put 1280 x 800 on s 12in widescreen then a wsxga on a 14.1in would be no problem.

i kinda agree with you. seeing that SXGA+ is possible on the 14" in standard aspect, then i think WXGA+ (1440x800) would be a nice resolution.

WSXGA on a 14" might be a little too smal..but i would really like a higher res screen. its kinda pointless ot have a crazy gpu with tons of ram and only have it drive a WXGA lcd.

    tsk tsk asus...
come on ... hook us up!

They should be about the same, from what I know.
And WXGA+ would be really nice - the low res is the only thing i'm hesitant about at this point, with 14" notebooks...

I hope that site is accurate when it says the A8jm is using an Nvidia MXM chip :)
although has anyone attempted upgrading it? since this is the 2nd generation, technically it should be possible to do so now?

whoa.. are you postive that the barebones will come with a WXGA+ res screen? if so that makes it better than just normal WXGA.
btw is WXGA+ 1440x800 or what.?? what is the exact resolution for a WXGA+?

are you serious?? if the A8Jm is using a MXM module it most likely will be MXM I or II. However I think MXM II module would have problems fitting into the laptop.

um..i think asus must have done some serious mods to the go7600 to get it to fit into the small chasis. if anything the power and heat requirements would have to be the same and then only would an upgrade be possible.

EDIT: read the whole article and saw the mxm module video card. that makes it awesome for upgrading..

WXGA+ is 1440 x 900. It's a common resolution for 17" notebooks since WXGA would be truly ridiculously low. The MacBook Pro (15.4") and Latitude D620 (14") are the only non-17" notebooks currently with WXGA+ screens.

WSXGA+ would be a bit small on a 14" wide as it's the same height as a 12" normal aspect and we don't see any SXGA+ 12" laptops.

Dell Latitude D620 - the only 14" offering WXGA+. Originally could be configured with the dedicated Nvidia NVS 110m video card (workstation card based off the 7300), but that's been removed for some reason.

im willing to sacrifice lower build quality over the higher end asus models. also having a crazy looking laptop makes it more of a target of theives.

    WXGA+/Intel Duo Core/512mb go7600/DVI/bluetooth/wifi abg/

drool. ok im pretty much sold again back to it.
seems its the best thing out there for me. and the only compromize for me would have to be the lower res...but since its a glossy screen who cares!!

btw anyone know what the barebones edition will be called? any pics etc??

Since I know many people eyeing the A8Jm are doing so for that 7600 and its
presumably better linux support than ATI, I thought I'd mention here that ATI's x1*** support for
    linux just came out today.

This at least puts the W3J and its x1600 on the table for linuxians. Same goes for the
    MBP.

I'd still rather go nvidia, but being in the U.S. seems to be hampering this position. If
initial reports on the ATI drivers are good I may go ATI instead of waiting until probably
June or later for an A8Jm or the Compal.

Does whitebox refer to the color of the laptop or the fact that it is a barebone? If the latter, what is the connection?

    barebone.

Whitebox or White Box is a term used to describe a homemade or small computer shop-made computer.

These systems were first called "whiteboxes" back in the early 1990's because of the white or manila colored computer case that these systems would generally have.

In general, in the assembly of a white box computer, parts and cases are all bought separately and then assembled either by the end user or specifically for him. This contrasts against assembly line-constructed PCs manufactured by such companies as Dell and Asus. In later years, the market for computer cases has expanded and the whitebox name has become a misnomer as many home built workstations will not in fact have black or ornate cases.

Many advanced computer users swear by whiteboxes. By constructing their own computer, it is possible for them to tailor make their systems and personally select hardware suitable to their needs.(wikipedia)

Whitebox is non-branded Asus barebone for dealers/custmers to customize CPU, memory and HD..., has nothing to do with color, could be white, black, yellow, blue :)

Before I saw the actual A8Jm, from pictures I also feel A8 looks cheap, but when I saw the actual unit, it is not bad at all, powerful wise, it is the twin of W3J, too bad I didn't have the time to do the benchmark test the other day.
Of course W3J looks nicer, more elegant, it is a masterpiece of Asus notebooks, but for people with a light bit tight budget and also want a well built, fully loaded, portable notebook, A8Jm is absolutely the best choice.

For the whitebox version of it, I talked with Asus today again, still no firm news, but he said we should expect it soon, but not on production plan yet, he said 512M nVidia is such a big big big thing, he dared not comment too much until get a good confirmation from Taiwan.
