I was just wondering how hot these laptops can safely get. When I am playing games like BF2 or Medieval II Total War the fan is blowing out some very hot air. Mobile monitor shows system temp to be around 65 C and the vid card is getting up to around 78 C. Is that too hot? Sorry if this is a stupid question.

The only stupid question is the one that remains unasked. ;)

Those temperatures, while quite warm, are well within acceptable limits considering how hard your machine is being worked. As long as you're not seeing any graphics glitches or artifacts, and are not experiencing any stability issues you should be fine.

my gpu has never reached that temperature.

after hours of gaming i do notice some heat. I dont notice any heat unless ive been gaming though.

the air cooling the gpu is on the bottom to the left of the out vent. It doesnt have much clearance on a table. It could stand to be raise up a little...

I game with it actually on my lap and that vent open

Mine is about that when browsing too. It's just when I start playing a game it starts to get really warm. What prog do you use to monitor the heat of your system? Mobile Monitor doesn't show the temp of the proc...at least I don't think it does.

Sorry guys, I'm just a freak when it comes to temp. I saved a lot of money for this laptop and to fry it would really tick me off.

A program called "Notebook hardware control"
    http://www.pbus-167.com/

It replaces power4gear. You'll get more control and more monitoring features.
Make sure to download the core2duo patch as well.

Well said, I run my Z81sp which has a 6800 go and a Hot P4 processor which I basically work it has hard as my desktop when it comes to cad and gamming. My graphics card does run between 75 - 80c (seen it at 85C once) when I am playing FEAR and my processor tends to say at around 68 to 73c and I don't notice and glitches or any other issues.

Did you clean your heatsink/vents recently? If not, have a look at the ASUS Info Booth / Maintenance / Cleaning. (link in my sig)
