Hello,
I am a (more or less) proud owner of a C90S AK001C here in Austria/Europe; so, first of all I have to excuse me for my bad English...
In Europe there is no dealer who offers the C90S for self-assembly by customers, so I bought a completed C90S. What I am missing is a simple old-fashioned IrDA (Infrared) module, which isn't installed allthough there is a place for it on the front-side of the notebook, right to the card-reader.
Does anyone of you know, if there is a IrDA-module available, that fits straight into the provided mounting place?

Huh, mine came with one, I have a universal remote set to Windows (I tried it for grins) and it worked. Now I just need to wait for my full version of Ultimate to arrive, tempted to install my upgrade version.

Hello RangerXML,
did your C90S come with a TV-card as well? ...And with the remote control-unit?
I suppose, only the C90S's with TV-card are also equipped with the IR-module for obvious reasons!?
But is the IrDA-receiver available separately?
I found a "C90 Keyparts List" under www.asus.com but no IR-Receiver-module is listed there, only the remote controler (Formosa21, PartNr.: MP-RC103BK/848/LF). This would be a standard controler delivered with a IR-USB-dongle... not my favourite solution, especially because I don't need the remote control.

No TV card, Windows has supported the IR port with remote functions since XP SP2 and Media Center Edition. I got a Universal Remote for Christmas (fun one with touch screen) and to my surprise it had PC and under it had Microsoft listed. I started up the standard Media player, it worked and then Winamp and it worked. As far as I could tell when I opened up my C90S is that the IR port is a part of the mobo, tho it had some problems finding the drivers for some reason. They load out of the blue after a few hours trying to track them down.

Windows installed the IR drivers when I inserted the Asus DVD so I guess it is OTB no?
-
I think there are no IR-drivers on the Asus DVD, at least I found nothing like that. But Windows has them for sure. There is no IR-device in my "Device manager" (Gerätemanager in German, I hope you know what I mean).
Do you see the IR-module in the device manager?
I still thought of being the IR module built in, but, if ever, it is not activated and I have no idea how it could be activated...
gschnu -
Listed in the Device Manager under "Human Interface Devices", as "ITECIR Infrared Receiver (EC RTC_A6)" and "Microsoft eHome Infrared Transceiver".
-
But as my Bluetooth Device could not be started, there was also nothing appropriate to see in the Device Manager.... maybe it's the same with the IR-Module!?
It is not easy to find out, if the hardware installer finds no new hardware. But I suppose there is no IR-receiver because this would have been listed on the sellers description, when i ordered the notebook. In Germany and Austria and maybe all over Europe there is no dealer offering the C90S with IR-connectivity, so why should I have one!
Is there no-one out there, who can tell me if the IR-receiver is available separately and where to get it?

i also bought my C90s in europe and it has no IR-connectivity too.
that was one of my first checks with the notebook, and if there would be one IR port, with would be located in the middle of the two speakers, the barebone has a spot there, to install one. mine has the plastic form only, so there definately insn't any...
but then again, i have bluetooth, you have it too for sure, so why would we want infrared when we have bluetooth? you should be considering to buy a bluetooth remote control instead of an infra red one...that's old technology -
of course my C90S has Bluetooth, but I often use it on the same place my desktop-Pc stands: Keyboard in the corner - Notebook on it's place - and there is already my wonderful IrDa Logitech Mouse lying on the right place! I symply would like to use this mouse for the PC and the NB, that's why a Im so hot on this IR-Module... a have also a Bluetooth mouse and the OEM "Asus" Logitec MX 518 delivered with the C90S, but I prefer the IR-mouse.

I seem to remember the original c90 specs stating it had IR, I even posted about it before it came out, but I do not believe my c90 has IR in it, I have not seen it in my device manager or in the computer itself when I have had it taken apart. so I guess only a few of them have it depending on where you bought it from or maybe just the first wave or something.

It would hurt to try if you have XP MCE, Vista Home Premium or Ultimate to just try a Windows remote.
-
@ViciuosXUSMC: If you already have openden your C90, at the place wher the IR-module should/could be installed, there were pins or something like that? Or is the IR-module an integrated part of some motherboards used? Then I can forget this idea ...
@RangerXML: I have XP Home installed because I disliked the preinstalled Vista Premium. -

There is an open spot, never looked into what goes there I think its the TV tuner spot tho.
-
TV Tuner goes in the open slot over the Bluetooth card. I'm gonna change out my HDD and Wireless card in the next week, I have a new digital camera and I'll take some pics.
ASUS C90S - is there an infrared-module available?
