What components do the ASUS built (not the barebones) notebooks use? For example, does ASUS use Samsung LCD panels, Seagate HDDs, DVD burner, etc.

What is ASUS's thought process? Quality or the lowest cost?

Which US online retailer provides the best price for ASUS notebooks? How about best warranty (although I heard ASUS notebooks are quite reliable so I dont know if that is necessary).

They use multiple manufacturers of everything..... it's all a contract bid.

    1. Samsung, LG, Philips, Hansol LCDs
    2. Hitachi, Fujitsu HDDs
    3. Toshiba, Panasonic, Pioneer ODDs
    4. Nanya RAM

If you don't know Asus, you better learn quick that their own product have nothing to do with lowest cost.... it's about quality.... everything above is ordered in order or how often they use what...... usually they move to the 2nd maker when the 1st gets too busy and can't complete orders.... nothing against any of the makers they use for anything, but all makers need to comply with whatever Asus needs... so all the specs are basically identical anyway.

I'm not going to speak any further about anything else, because I'm sure you can find a better price on a notebook than from us, because we help Asus set their prices and naturally others need to sell for else to take business away from us. In terms of warranty, Asus covers the warranty on Ensembles and on Barebones, I'd have to say no one is going to cover more than us, but there are others who should cover about the same..... but you're right.... we've got notebooks kicking almost 6 years now and never needed work... Asus' fail rate that we've seen over that period and averaging it with what Asus says they see..... you're looking at under a 1% failure rate...... In other words, of all companies, you probably need to worry the least about Asus in terms of warranty..... warranty is super important when you know you're buying junk and you know it's going to fail...... but a warranty is important nonetheless.

Thanks ProPortable, you gave a very informative response.

What do you have to say about the first components on your list (aka Samsung LCD, Hitachi, Toshiba ODD and Nanya RAM)? Are they good quality? Does the LCD have low defect rates? Is there a different LCD is I get like a Crystal Shine instead of a Color Shine?

Although you might not know, what are the failure/ return rates for other brands of notebooks?

Are all the ASUS notebooks made in Taiwan? I heard they are starting to make them in China.

...... What do I have to say? What didn't I say? I think I made it pretty clear. If I didn't, I'll say it again... Asus is known for using good parts.... Hitachi hard drives are good, but personally I like Seagate based on their batterylife/heat output and longer warranty.... and that's mainly what we use on our custom systems.... and as far as ram goes, we use Corsair because it's warrantied for life and the customer can go right to corsair for replacement.... not that we need to offer that, but for us, why not? There is nothing wrong with what Asus uses because they warranty the computer and that's all they need to do.... we look at parts that will continue to offer a warranty to customers directly even after their warranty with us is up....

.... the lcd panels now are all about identical...... all the companies are so generic in terms of their products due to the type of production they do..... they're not putting out their own products, they're mainly doing contract building and this is bid to spec...... so a certain number of backlights and a certain brightness, contrast, etc...... the only thing that some times varies is viewing angle...... I think Asus wants something like 140 degrees minimum.... so they get that and sometimes they get up to 170...... and those may vary between shipments, but you're talking about great and greater... ie: more than you should expect.

I don't know what other companies failure rates are, but I know there isn't much in any field who can claim even in the single digits....... and speaking just of computer companies, there are some who count on failure so you'll buy a new computer in a year or two.......

Taiwan, China...... Iowa..... it really doesn't matter. Asus builds 1,000's of computers a day..... I think it's like 3,000-4,000 at the least... they pump things out for everyone under the sun and they have the same quality checks and build processes no matter what factory they're built at......

interesting thing is I've just bought my third ASUS notebook (in 6 months) and all have had different HDD's. First had a Hitachi, 2nd - Fujitsu, and the laatest is a seagate. They have also all had different versions of 8x DVD-RW drives too. And all notebooks are A6's

The model with the Seagate in it was custom built system - not one Asus built..... Asus doesn't built out the Z series models.... and they have never used Seagates on any scale.

......... but like I said.... Hitachi and Fujitsu HDDs / Toshiba and Panasonic ODDs..... This year on all the core duo models Fujitsu seems to have been in 90% of the shipments........
