i've noticed that everytime i connect to my own network with my ASUS Eee PC EPCS101 within 5 mins or so my whole network crashes and i have to restart it. Just pulling the plug and putting it back in. Any ideas? should i update the network card or what?

if you have a spare router, try it with that.
if it goes down and youre running windows, try burning + booting into an ubuntu liveCD @ http://www.ubuntu.com/getubuntu/download
if it still goes down, try setting your address + dns manually (ipv4 properties in windows, ifconfig in *nix)
if it STILL crashes, install (or get the portable) wireshark on both the eee and another machine and see if something unusual seems to be happening (any kind of flooding).

Have you tried updating your router firmware?

You talk to your IT department and ask for an IP address. To do otherwise is to wreak havoc on their LAN. Well... At least you could remove the machine whose IP address you duplicated. If that happens to be a server, there could be serious problems. If it's the guy in the next cube, you may just prevent them from getting their work done.

I've been on the receiving end of that a couple of times (both server and my workstation) and it was pretty annoying. And it makes you look bad. If your IT department are any good at all, they will find you.

To the OP, if your PC is crashing your router, it seems likely to be a problem with the router. I have a Linksys WRT150N and found that it apparently crashed when I tried to examine the WiFi security settings. I installed DD-WRT (on the router) and no longer have that problem.

    HTH,

Lol Im actually not with a firm right now just at the family store. So im pretty much the "IT department" its not like i can ask my mom for an IP address LOL. I havn't the slightest clue as how to update the firmware, do you mean drivers or like reflashing it? O_O.

before trying David's suggestion of updating the firmware, see if your router has an option somewhere to "clear all dhcp leases" or something along those lines.

with a linksys router, most have it in Status -> Local Network -> DHCP client table, and you would delete them one by one. i dont know about other makes.
