Nearly 1 year old my ASUS F3F all of a sudden started illuminating a red laser type like from the headphone/S/PDIF jack. Previous to this I was listening to music amped through a receiver and noticed that the laptop speakers were playing as well, even though the headphone jack was being used. I had some problems with my speakers not working on last years F series model as well.

Does anyone know anything about this? Can I remedy this myself? I'm thinking of already servicing it since I get a line across my screen when I twist the screen just a bit (connection at hinge i'm sure).

I think the red light is the optical digital signal. You could try reinstalling the driver to eliminate it as the possible cause.

    Yep, that one.

It may also be hardware, where the socket detects that an optical jack has been plugged in, without it being true. In which case you would need to replace the jack / send it in RMA.

Tried both from Asus site...first one said that it was older than what I had so I couldn't preceed, and the other one was just a realtek audio manager. Red laser led is still shining!

If I may add, this happens on my Asus A8Jm. I thought it was supposed to light up so you can see your hole =P

Nope, it was never on before...just recently after a glitch where I had my headphone jack plugged in but the laptop speakers kept playing! There HAS been known issues with Asus and this including my old F3F series. The only other time it was shining red was with Vista, but with XP no...except for now. I guess it isn't a big deal, except for when i'm blinded by it!

I'll call ASUS if noone else has any more info.
