I use my headphone out jack to connect to my stereo so I can listen to tunes amplified on my home speakers. I sounds awesome, except for this annoying noise kind of like static or more like a humming sound. The interesting thing is that this happens only on A/C power. If I use the battery, it's completely silent and everything is perfect. Also, if i'm on a/c and I plug in my s-video cable to the laptop AND tv then it also goes away. So it sounds like a grounding thing. Would you supposed that my power adapter is defective? It's been doing this since I bought it and it's only 1 month old.

Any help or insight is greatly appreciated.

Your power adapter may not be broken, in fact not likely. It could be outlets on your wall that could be a problem. When I friend hooked up his sound system, he tested all his wall outlets, each one of them gave a different amount of buzzing/humming sound untill he found one that gave the least sound at the highest amount of volume.

Thanks for your reply. This is quite likely as I live an apartment and the power may be "dirty". However, with that being said, all my other 20+ laptops i've ever had (in this apartment) have never had this problem. I guess that ASUS is just more sensitive to this type of noise.

Sounds like an interference problem.. If you are really serious about this, you might try using shielded cables.
Another issue might be that the impedances of your jacks/wires may not be matched.
