I just read it myself apparently ASUS is coming out with a new bios for both the G51 and G71 tomorrow.

I guess you did too! -
I wonder if this will actually "fix" the G51's high temps.

Not unless there is an error in temperature reporting, then the answer is not appreciably.
-
If it drops the temperatures in the G51 buy a fair margin I'll be settled on my new laptop.

How do I install the new BIOS?
-
Steelers fans... geez. -
Isn't the supposed heat problem because the sink doesn't touch the card enough?
BIOS flash won't fix that. -
That's what people just assumed after one picture. Someone else posted a picture showing their heat sink with full contact and they still had the problem. The internet promotes widespread assumptions.

Please save your snooty remarks for someone more deserving.

Good pickup there man. You have my respect.
I suppose you could call that a text based Freudian slip... maybe. -
Welp, either way, I know that I haven't had any heat problems.
In fact my G50 had more artifacts in Crysis than my G51, and I know for a fact it got quite a bit hotter. -

Voltage changes could indeed be made that lower or increase operating temperatures, but given that there is nothing wrong with the performance output of the card, any voltage changes should fall into the category of "minor tweaks." Any changes in operating temps for G51 users, unless there is a reporting error, will not be noteworthy.
Undeserving? That my initial post was in no way unclear, the second, it seems, was quite necessary. Cheers. -

The BIOS could tweak temperature reporting or the fan settings, but it's not likely to have a big impact on temperatures.

Hopefully the G51 doesn't need these kind of band-aids applied to it. The obvious downsides to more aggressive fan settings are decrease of battery life and NOISE -

I had an Nvidia 6800 or 7900 GO card (not sure which now) in a 17 inch Inspiron 9300. The GPU's fan died after less than two years of ownership, so I'm no stranger to seeing 4400 rpm fans choking to death. In Nvidia's defense, Dell's cooling design was responsible for allowing an inordinate amount of dust and debris to collect between the fan and the heatsink and fins.
