Hi,
Does anyone here have a G1 _and_ a utility that they have installed that allows them to set the fan to a certain speed and/or temp & keep it there? I know about speedfan, NHC, & Everest. They read speeds & temperatures, but on my G1, they don't seem to be able to control the fan speed. Speedfan seems to indicate multiple fans, but the G1 only has one fan. Sitting on the desk, plugged in to AC, and doing _nothing_, my CPU and hd temps are 47-50C according to NHC. God only knows what the cpu & gpu temp would be when it is actually working hard. Is there even a temperature sensor for the gpu? RivaTuner apparently has no temp monitoring capabilities for the 7700 go driver. If someone knows from personal experience that I'm wrong about any of this, please point me in the right direction. I just dropped close to 2 grand on this thing, and I'd like it to last a few years, but not at these temps. Short of soldering the fan leads to the battery terminals, is there a way to postively control fan speed /cooling in the G1? At this point, I'm inclined to say this unit is way under fanned. That & the spartan CMOS setup are the only two major gripes I have so far. Any insight is always appreciated.

I am using ATI Tool with my asus G1 and it gives a good temp reading on the GPU. On average the GPU runs about 8-10 c hotter than the CPU.
Under load playing games like Dark Messiah, Tomb Raider Legends, Gothic 3 and LOTRO, CPU hits about 67c and GPU 78c. Oh, and I have the 7700 core and memory overclocked 25mhz. Hope this helps some. -
Thanks,
That's about the temps mine run at. It just seems hot to me. It's into the "yellow" zone on every temp monitor program I've tried. (except Asus probe, of course, that just says "normal". There is a utility called i8kfangui that I use on my dell that allows you to turn the fans on high & keep them there no matter what the temperatures are. Does anybody know of a utility like this for the G1? -

It should and will reach into the 80C mark for cpu without a problem. if it did not i would say the unit is OVER fanned.
Here are normal temps at hi-load. not for every laptop but it is what you should expect. if you get less then that is ok too
hdd @ full load : 55-60C
cpu @ full load : 70-85C
Absolutely nothing wrong with those temps -
I'm glad to hear that. My perspective on this comes from the fact that my inspiron, with both fans on low speed, full time, has idle temps of 26deg. I fully expect that under load , a laptop will see higher cpu/gpu/hd temps, but it struck me as odd that the G1 would idle this high. OTOH, if you say that these are standard temps for most current vintage laptops, and there aren't thousands of thermal failures that I know of, I'll go with your experience on this one, and try to stop worrying. I like this thing, & I want it to last. I'd still like to get that fan utility, though;-)

I know what you're saying re: people complaining about noise, battery life, etc. I'd just like to make those choices myself. A few more CMOS options would have been nice, even if it was just "profiles", i.e., low noise, low heat, max battery life, whatever. It bugs me that these settings are 100% innaccessible out of the box.

Can you provide a link to the ATI tool you are using to monitor temps?
TIA!

You can use NHC to control the fan. Someone over at NHC forums (english section of the german forums) uploaded the A6T files, and they do control the fan speed. I think the notebooks are close enough for it to work. You might just need to change the XML file to say that its a G1 and not a A6t and you're away.
When i had XP installed i could change the fan speed on the fly, was rather freakey really.
see attached file...
insane
EDIT** this cant be the right file, I just opened it in visual studio and fan section of the A6T is all comented out... I'll look again, i saved it somewhere...Attached Files:

Thanks Insane, I'll give it a try!

I also wonder if there is a heat issue. I posted the issue with my G1 over in the gaming forum. It only appears after playing for a certain time and there are now others having the same problem.

What monitoring software do you guys use?
I have downloads motherboard monitor, samurize, HMonitor ect and some only work partially or not at all.
ATI Tool crashes when I try to run it on my system before it finishes loading. -
I don't use anything to monitor temps other than what is already there. I tried installing ATI tool a couple times and it was crashing for me as well when trying to run it.

What *is* already there besides the nbprobe which shows nothing?

so wait, does speedfan (or some other fan ctrl software) work this machine?
Sorry to threadcrap, but I'd like to know how the fan behaves if the machine is idle, with nvidia powerplay on minimum & CPU set to minimum in NHC.
e.g. what rpm is the fan under those conditions?
