I got my G1 today and it's the BEST notebook I've ever touched. Everything is perfect except this ONE problem: Why is the left side of the keyboard loose? It's annoying when I type since the left and right feel different and the left side makes wierd noises.
Is there a way to remove the keyboard and fix up the base? I really want a nice keyboard.
thx

Check the bottom to see if the keyboard screws are loose? Also check if the tabs for the keyboard(located at the top edge of keyboard) are fully locked in place.
-
thx. i found the screws and relocked them tightly, but it doesnt help.
I know the problem now. There's 2 screws for the keyboard. One for the center, one for the right, and none for the left, which explains why the left feels shaky since there's no screw for it.
Now I'm probably going to find a way to lift the keyboard up and put a solid piece under. -

There should be a bit of an overhand type clip on the left side...... push down hard on the tab and the buttons on that side... it may have simply popped out.

heh? tab? where?
anyone have pics? or can i just take out the keyboard and reinsert it -

Justin means the tab key, by Caps Lock, esc, ~, so on. Press down there.

Are you able to fix it? I am anxiously waiting for a solution. We've been talking about this problem in the owner's lounge thread.
How hard should I press on the keys? Do I need to open it up to fix it? If yes, can you give me a rough outline on how to do it?
Thanks! -

98% of all Asus keyboards are held in 2 or 3 ways.....
1. 2 screws under the system simply pull it tight
2. 3-4 spring clips spread equally along the top of the first row of keys (above ESC, DEL.. and either F8 or around F6/F10).... you push those back with a small flat screw driver, or to install make sure they are showing.
3. Some, but not all have a non-moving clip which is around 1" from the top on the left and right sides.... that's typically where I see probably having problems, because even when installing the keyboard, those little clips aren't immediately obvious.
*this does not cover the smaller systems that are 13" or smaller, as they don't have the screws under the system..... and the W1/W2 don't have spring clips, but rather the entire black bar above the keyboard comes off w/ 5 tiny screws under the battery. -
GUYS I FIXED IT BY MYSELF! i took the keyboard out w/o instructions.
theres 2 screws (center and right) and 3 tabs. what's causing the flex is the the holes under the keyboard for cabling and components. here's the instructions for fixing it
1) unscrew the 2 screws marked K under the system
2) find the 3 tabs on the top of the keyboard.
3) use a flat screwdriver and pull the keyboard out by using the tabs
4) now, find a hard sheet of paper or use multiple layers and cut it out in the shape of the bottom of the keyboard. try to cover up the places where the holes made for components are. basically, do whatever u can think of to add another layer to the bottom.
5) screw everything back in and it's fixed!
i can't find anything but index cards, so i managed to fix the rattling and flexing, but MINOR flex still exists
My promise: I will get pics of the fix tomorrow. -
Yes, go pictures!

Thanks for sharing. I am a little take aback by asus not detecting this problem in a $1800 notebook. Anyway, I'll try to see what I can do there. I am wondering, however, should we use paper? Will it catch fire easily? Also, do we need to add a layer to the whole keyboard instead of just the left side?

Here's what I did. Get a very small piece of parcel packaging tape (I am sure you can find whatever that can use), fold it up a couple of time to make it thick. Press down the cntrl key and insert it into the tiny spece at the bottom of the cntrl key where the keyboard plate meets the chasis. No need to insert too far. Cut off the protruding tape, snug the rest of it under the cntrl key (so that it will not scratch the screen). Now the rattling sound is gone, though there's still a little flex which is ok.
Obviously there can be some problems with this method. The tape may get into the computer completely. Will it interfere with the optical drive? (It will not if the drive is self-enclosed.)
Not that I am recommending this method. I am simply sharing with you what I am doing. It might even end up to be a bad idea. You have to use your own judgement. -
This definitely is concerning in a notebook of this price range. Nice to see that you fixed the problem, though

I've had the G1 for about 2 weeks now, and the keyboard rattle was about the only thing I didn't like about it. Here's what I did, maybe some owners here will find it useful:
Asus G1 keyboard fix (with pictures)
BTW, I'm new to these boards, and I'm impressed by the helpful community. It was invaluable in helping me make the notebook purchase on very short notice. Just one question, why hasn't anyone created an "Asus G1 owner's lounge" thread that seems to be popular with the other models? -

My G1 has no problems with the Keyboard ,but the Display going to change in black and color!
it is crazy! but i had it sent back! -
When I bought the G1 in January, I got a unit that had the keyboard rattle described in this thread. I then RMAed it to the retailer for another reason, and happily the replacement doesn't have the rattle. The left side is secured as well as the right side of the keyboard. There is still some flex in the top of the keyboard around the F3 through F6 keys, but I can live with this; it doesn't bother me at all, unlike the rattle I had before. So apparently, many G1s have the keyboard rattle problem, while some don't. Perhaps unspecified newer revisions fixed the problem.

My G1 does not rattle and has very little noticeable keyboard flex, also I have a light leakage-free display!
