I have an Asus G1 laptop, and for some reason, I cannot hear any sound that is played over the internet (i.e. youtube). Sound does not play on Firefox, IE, Opera, and it doesn't work with headphones or external speakers. Help!
-
ClearSkies Well no, I'm still here..
OK, so you've already checked the obvious in the speaker control panel and both the WAV and Master Volume sliders are up and not muted? Next would be to check the Device Manager and be sure that the sound card wasn't deactivated for some reason. Can you play CD/DVD's with sound?

I imagine some codec problems? Streaming audio/video from the internet usually requires different codecs than the static content on the HDD.
YouTube uses Flash/Shockwave, so you could reinstall that and see if that fixes the problem. -

This is really strange. Are you sure it's not some settings that you made?
To make it explicit: is the offline music / movies working fine?
You could use a Firefox extension such as Download Helper to download the YouTube movies to the computer, and try to play them offline. That might help with determining the cause of this thing. -
-
Nope, not from me
-
Oh well, thanks anyway.

You sure you didn't accidentally hit like a master mute button on one of those programs like Real Player (Real Player is a piece of crap software btw...)... Have you tried reinstalling them?
-
I didn't press any mute button. Do you mean I should reinstall my web browsers?
-
I think he meant real player or whatever software is the integrated player in the browsers.
Reinstalling browsers can't harm, either. Just make sure you clear the profile folder as well. -
This may sound stupid, but what is the profile folder and how do i clear it?

To resolove this problem, I recommend doing the following:
The easiest solution is to download a registry hotfix. http://depositfiles.com/files/1492978
I did not upload this file, but it is linked from http://www.mydigitallife.info/2007/...d-applications-no-sound-and-audio-in-windows/
If you wish to do it manually, then follow these instructions:
1. Launch Registry Editor by typing regedit at Run command.
2. Navigate to the following registry key:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\Drivers32
3. On the right pane, and check for existance of “wavemapper” registry subkey, the mail culprit causing Flash no sound. If not found, create a new String value named “wavemapper”, and give the entry value “msacm32.drv”.
If wavemapper entry is already existed, ensure that its value data is “msacm32.drv”.
Also ensure and verify that the msacm32.drv driver file is existing in C:\Windows\System32 folder. If the file is missing in that location, search for other copy of msacm32.drv in the computer, or copy that file from another system. -
