Both the A8Js and G1 feature a geforce 7700go, but if you check the reviews, you'll notice that the A8Js 3D 05 and 06 benchmarks are better than the G1's. For instance, A8Js got 2665 on 3d mark 06 while G1 got 2389.
Why? Does the G1 come at a lower stock clockspeed? G1 also gives an extra gig of ram!

    I can't figure that out.

higher resolution maybe? G1 might be more taxing on the same video card if both were run at native resolutions (1440x900 vs. 1680x1050)

That was exactly what I had in mind! But I wasn't sure that was the case, I mean, what if the benchmarks were tested on the SAME resolution?

What's unclear is the resolution the benchmarks ran at...

    thx

You nailed it. 3DMark06, in a landmark bad decision by Futuremark, runs by default at 1280x1024 by default, but scales back to 1280xwhatever you can display if you can't display 1280x1024. Since the G1 can display 1280x1024, but the A8Js can only display 1280x854, the A8Js appears to score better.

It's extremely likely that this is what happened, as you can only change the resolution in the registered version.

There's been talk that Futuremark has been changing the calculation formula for 3DMark06, so the other possibility is that the G1 scores are "correct" since the newer notebook was likely tested with the latest 3DMark06, while the A8Js scores may be older and used the older formula.

Just thought I'd point out that my W3J with a T7200 scored a 2211 on my last 3DMark06 test. Not too shabby for a 14" notebook. :D

Ive seen a lot of strange 3dmark numbers recently that just made me want to ignore anything posted that says 3d mark.

Never mind that the thing is 500 mb and takes lots of your time but in the last month they altered the test to give ati cards a better score. This is probably because it was a bad test to start with and all the ati card owners ignored it, but to change the test just makes all the data worthless.

I think its definitely time for a gpu benchmark, just some 10 mb file that shows like 3 different applications. No pictures just shows the speed, then with aa x 4 thats it.
Thats what the people want from 3d mark they want the gpu speed not some general system benchmark

it really doesnt even explain what it is, what is being tested. Its just a few different scenes which dont really have anything to do with a game but call on different shaders.
The gpu manufacturers sites that show you the fill rate pipelines etc give you a better idea how its going to perform
